Dating from the mid to late 19th century and originating from Burma. The body is carved. Lacquered, and gilded wood decorated with inlaid glass gems and mirror work. The head, hands, and feet are made or carved white translucent alabaster, and the ornate gilded head piece is made of metal. Circa 1865- 1890's. Mandalay. Burma(Myanmar) SIZE: Height(including headpiece& base) 21.25" 54 cm) Width- 12.5" 31.8 cm) Depth- 8.5" 21.6 cm) This Buddha is very elegant and striking with a beautiful. Peaceful expression carved into the alabaster face and graceful stylized carving of the hands and feet. It depicts the Buddha as a young man. The head dress or crown ... moreis made of cut and fabricated metal. Probably sheet iron or brass, and decorated with stamp-work, hand-cut inlaid glass mirrors, and a gilded surface. It is removable. The carved alabaster head has elongated ears and sits in a cavity at the neckline of the carved wooden body. It is easily removable. The alabaster is of a fine grade. Very pure and white with a slightly translucent quality that makes it almost glow in the light. The features of the face are carved, incised, and colored black, red, and blue(the eyes) The hands and feet are permanently attached to the wood body and are not movable. I bought these two in Burma in the early 90’s back when Burma saw fewer than 40.000 foreign visitors per year. At that time true antiques were easy to find but today it’s nearly impossible and sadly most are fakes. These two Nats are very weathered and this one is a little more rough- the paint on the left side of his face is nearly gone from age and environment and his hair has fallen from the bun/wrap. You can see ridges carved into the front of the neck, which suggest these rings) Longyi skirt decorated with a simple floral motif in horizontal bands. Strap across the forehead. Carved from hardwood, lacquered and gilded in the Shan State of Burma. It was taken out of that country before the interdiction of exports was imposed in the'90's. The Shan State is located in the northeast of Burma(Myanmar) It covers 155.800 km, almost a quarter of the total area of that country. The state gets its name from the Shan people, the largest of several ethnic groups that inhabit the hills and plateaus of the largely rural area. Beautiful and rather grand statue of the Lord Buddha carved from one piece of wood, lacquered and gilded in Burma, sometime in the late 1800's. He is made in what is known as the Mandalay style During the Konbaung Dynasty in Burma. At the end of the 18th century, the Mandalay style of the Buddha image emerged. A style that remains popular to this day. There was a marked departure from the Ava style. Which featured much more attenuated figurers. In the Mandalay style the Buddha's face is much more natural and full, with naturally-slanted eyebrows, slightly slanted eyes, thicker lips, and a round hair bun at the top. Mandalay-style Buddhas wear flowing. Draped robes. This is a lovely 19th Century Burmese hand carved teak wood box with Opium scale inside! The carved design of Poppies is on each side of the box. A small nail holds the ends as shown. Old metal scale inside with metal fulcrum. Plates, etc. Old twine or thread attached as shown. Balance seems to work great. A magnet does not stick to any of the metal. Antique Teak Wood Burmese Nat Doll 19C Amulet The nats are spirits worshipped in Burma(or Myanmar) in conjunction with Buddhism. They are divided between the 37 Great Nats and all the rest(i.e. Spirits of trees, water, etc. Almost all of the 37 Great Nats were human beings who met violent deaths( lit. green death" They may thus also be called nat sein(lit. green spirits) The word'sein' while meaning'green' is being used to mean'raw' in this context. There are however two types of nats in Burmese Buddhist belief. Nat spirits are termed lower nats or auk nats whether named or unnamed. Whereas ahtet nats or higher nat dewas inhabit the six heavens. Much like sainthood, nats can be designated for a variety of reasons, including those only known in certain regions in Burma. Nat worship is less common in urban areas ... morethan in rural areas, and is practised among ethnic minorities as well as in the mainstream Bamar society. It is however among the Buddhist Bamar that the most highly developed form of ceremony and ritual is seen. Unequivocal, expresses a vast idea in a gist form, is non-repetitive and doesn’t contain any fault is known as a Sutra. In other words in terms that most of us can more clearly understand. A Sutra is an aphoristic or cryptic statement that expresses a very broad statement in a few words. The practical application of this is that in many Burmese homes or businesses, Sutra's hang on the walls to protect the inhabitants from a variety of things. Soldiers even often carried folded Sutra's into ... morebattle to protect them from the dangers of the enemy. Vintage Carved Wood Figure Burmese Burma Dancer with Fan, possibly teak
Coming from an estate auction that included a lot of very nice Asian antiques. The only thing I actually know about her is she has a sticker on the bottom that has written on it: Burma. It may be from the prior owner, but the costuming looks correct to me for that, so I'm assuming it is correct. She looks in very good condition. With a soft patina? to the wood, I think it is teak, but not positive. The wood looks as it may have been burnt some prior to being carved, there is a black burnt area on a bottom corner and a bit showing near her waist. The only flaw, if it is one, is that the tip of her hair may have been broken off, but if so it was done quite a while back, but it may have been carved this way. 10 1/4" tall. It measures 9 inches(230 mm) long and 11 1/2 inches(293 mm) tall on the stand. Meant to have seven strings. There are just three strings attached on this piece. This saung-gauk has a red and black lacquer finish. With detailed gold trim. There is chipping and wear to the finish(see pictures) This boat harp is modeled after full size playable instruments; however. Was not designed to be played and is probably a toy or souvenir piece.

Vintage Burmese Large Wood Dice Childs Game
A set of 3 large hand painted wood dice. Most likely a child's game. Each one, which is a 4.5" cube, is painted on the sides with a colorful animal: Tiger, Turtle, Elephant, Fish, Shrimp, and Rooster. The colors are vibrant, but the white base color of the dice has worn. They are rustic and charming.
