RARE Antique Burmese Nat - Carved Wood. Spirit Worship Burma Buddhism Doll
I have two wonderful authentic antique Nats for sale this week. This sale is for the one pictured only. I bought these two in Burma in the early 90’s back when Burma saw fewer than 40.000 foreign visitors per year. At that time true antiques were easy to find but today it’s nearly impossible and sadly most are fakes. These two Nats are very weathered and this one more so than the other. The paint on the left side of his face is nearly gone and his real hair has become unraveled. The paint is chipped in a few places so take a good look at the photos. I suspect he sat under a Bo tree outdoors for many years but he is still wonderful to look at and is full of character. Burmese were animists who worshipped a series of nature spirits called Nats. These spirits became converted to Buddhism and thus became helpers of the monks. This was a deliberate policy on the part of King Anawratha and the rulers of Burma in the 11th century. At the same time, these spirits often have their own ceremonies and festivals and are worshipped in addition to the Buddha. There are 37 officially recognized Nats, each with its own history and image. The Nats, as spirits of natural forces, such as water, wind, stones and trees, take many guises. The Nats are all ghosts or spirits of heroes except for one, the chief Nat, Thagyamin Nat(the Indian god Indra, protector of royalty) who was elevated to this position in the 11th century by the great unifier, King Anawratha, who integrated Nat worship into Buddhism. Rare Antique Burma / Burmese Sword Dao / Dha Silver mounts No Reserve
The Dao was the national sword of the Naga tribe of Burma. They were fierce warriors and head hunters. This one is a classic example in fine antique condition. The hilt has a red painted or dyed wood or Bamboo root grip. At the blade end there is a heavy silver ferrule. The pommel which looks like bone but is the more expensive natural materiel has a nice age patina. On top. See photo, is an inlaid" cross" design which is outlined in brass. The maker took a lot of time to put this in this extra ornamentation. The flared straight single edged blade is hand-forged with a gray patina and a squared tip. One side near the tip has some age pitting. This blade is still fairly sharp. The are several good honest edge nicks and some cuts on the back also. This sword was used in battle. Antique Burmese Dha Knife, Sword, Extremely Rare Grip
This is an extremely rare dha. About 30cm OAL. Typically these will have a tusk or tooth in the grip, but this particular example has a tooth from a certain large feline predator, making it a very unique example. I am told by an expert on these knives and swords that this animal has very special significance among the Karen people. The rest of the knife is complete. The silver work is excellent. The hairpin is from the Naga people of Nagaland in far north-eastern India& north-western Burma. From their strong warrior tradition to their struggle for identity in the face of Christian missionaries, is very interesting. I found a lady from Burma who dealt in Burmese jade; these items were in her family's collection. After much conversation and some purple jade buying I secured them and they have been with me for thirty years. They are highly decorated: The octagon box weighs 70+grams- approximately1.75H X 2.5 X 2.5 inches& decorated with birds. Flora and nice floral panels on the side. The large round box weighs 59+ grams and has a 2.75 inch diameter& 2 inches high- floral motif. The small round weighs 48+ grams& is 2.5 inches in diameter& ... more1.75 inches high-floral motif. Dark red(ebony? wood. Lovely carved bird and pinwheel flowers on the top bar and flowers on the lower bar. The gong is either brass or bronze? Not sure. Has the old Burmese stamp of a man which dates it somewhere between 1886- 1912. Measures: Gong- 13.25" sq x 1.75" deep Stand measures: 24.5 x 40 when put together. The wood frame as you can see below was broken off at one time and they tried to fix it by placing a screw in there. This is a very high quality antique 19th century hand carved solid white marble stone Burmese Buddha sculpture. it is carved from one solid piece of beautiful white marble and is extremely heavy weighing 30 pounds. it has a lovely hand applied gold leaf finish which has nice gold and orange colors. it also has a hand laid cut mirror pattern wrapping around his head. it is carved with an abundance of intricate detailing and is beautifully carved. Buddha is seated on a beautifully cut base which has a detailed pattern wrapping the front and is natural stone in the back and underside. it is in very nice condition and measures 14 3/4 inches tall by 10 inches wide. Burmese Royal‘Opium’ Weight This is an Extremely rare Antique Pyu 15th century Royal Burmese Opium Weight. The royal animal‐shaped weights. Commonly called‘Opium Weights’ of the Burmese Empires are unique not only as a weight system, but also as one of the most important artifact series in a country with but few durable artifacts. It is thought Buddhist art in India gave rise to the Burmese choices of animal motifs to use on their weights. Among the Royal Weights of Burma. The Pyu style weight is very rare. According to Gear, this style is among the earliest, dating to the reign of Shinsawbu 1453-60. It is characterized in Group 6, period M of Gear’s system. The weight is a bird form with a vertical tail with 3 head knobs. Mounted on an octagonal drum shaped base. The weight is constructed of bronze covering a pegmatite(stone) core. The Bird has lost its tail at some point in the distant past, with the rear portion of the bird showing heavy patina from exposure over the years. The images on the sides of the drum are very worn. The 2 bird figures can be readily seen, but the round cartouche which contains the typical snake symbol can barely be seen, and only portions of the more rectangular cartouche of script can be see. Included in the photos here are examples of the same style Pyu weight with more distinct images to compare with this example. This is one of three dozen Bur mese antique artifacts collected by the consignor at the antique stalls of Scott's market and others in the late 1990’s in Yangon. Antique Burmese Opium Weight Scale - Rare
I acquired this antique opium weight scale in Mandalay. Burma in the early 1970's. The scale is believed to date from the 19th century, possibly to early 20th century. It is complete and in working condition and has been well used. The case is carved from hardwood to custom fit the scale pieces, and is lacquered. The lacquer is worn and the brass scale parts are oxidized as can be seen in the photos. Scale is complete. Case measures about 7-1/4"x3-1/4"x1-1/2" Scale beam measures about 6-1/4"long and pans about 2-1/2" in diameter. This is a rare great relic of a bygone era and a nice addition to any opium weight collection. Ship USA only
