This is an unusual standing figure holding an alms bowl and wearing a cloak which flares out. He is made of solid brass and is very unusual. He is 19 cms high and 12 cms in width and weighs almost 1 kilo. Hence the shipping costs. I am downsizing my collection of Buddhas. On the lid of the bowl is another standing figure depicted in the act of sacrificing a bird. This bowl is moderately large in stature, dense and heavy, and is beautifully pigmented across most of its surface. Though some of its color has faded with age, it is largely intact, and is a truly exceptional example of the artform. I believe this dates to pre-WW2, but that is only my opinion. Fruit or other type of food would most likely be the offering given. This may have been used for Shinto or ancestor-offerings as well, but I lean toward the Buddhist use. In any case, this is a very attractive offering bowl with the cut-out designs and gold-leaf. I believe the hole cut-out in the bowl is for draining if something like fruit starts to sweat or leak juices. The bowl is removable from the stand for cleaning. Pre-Columbian - Chupícuaro ceremonial offering bowl
This terracotta Chupícuaro ceremonial offering bowl has an interesting abstract design arranged in a spiral on the sloping interior surface. This design has been executed in a type of negative painting technique where the buff substrate is an integral and intricate part of the pattern. Inside and out the rim is wrapped in a 1/2” band of red slip with a fire clouded underside accented by an undulating line. The ceramic style is named after the village of Chupícuaro in the western Mexican state of Guanajuato. Located in the Guanajuato valley surrounded by the Sierra de Guanajuato and situated on the Lerma River the culture was active from about 500 BCE to 250 CE. Luckily excavations of the site were conducted in 1946-7 revealing much of what we know today. In 1949 the Solís Dam was constructed. This led to the flooding of the ... morearea which today remains under a lake formed by this act. Chupícuaro ceramics were formed without the use of a potting wheel making the quality of their craftsmanship all the more remarkable. As observed by Richard E. W. Adams in his book Prehistoric Mesoamerica. There is no doubt that Chupícuaro represents an exuberant ceramic tradition in full flower. Dimensions: 4 ¾” diameter. 2” high. Condition: There is a compression fracture running across approx. 1/3 of the bowl culminating in some lost ceramic at one end point. There is also some red slip loss. Provenance- This item was recently obtained from the estate of the late Willis Pratt. A career academic at the University of Texas in Austin. Dr. Pratt owned a residence in Guanajuato and frequently visited Western and Central Mexico between the mid 1930’s and mid 1960’s. This unique technique utilizes the four elements: earth(clay) fire(the firing) water(immersion) air(reduction) This FINE CERAMIC Blessing Bowl is handmade and hand glazed. The majority is raku fired for the glaze. Although a small portion ... moreis oxidation fired in an electric kiln. The artist uses stamps in bowls and incense burners. And the majority are hand carved in clay, a time consuming process requiring slowly carving away the many layers to the design edges. Some of the designs take many hours. Beautiful Goddess Statue Candle Holder & Offering Bowl Set
Purchased this set several years ago and have never used. BEAUTIFUL two items that feel and came as a set but I do not know if they were made to be a set; I did buy them at the same place along the Oregon cost back around 2002 maybe. I don't know who she is but she stands 17 inches tall and 8 1/2 inches from tip of hand to the candle holder she holds with the other. Holds an average sized base taper candle. She has amber colored stones adorning her belt and pearls on the dress and belt. Also along the hat. The bowl is 5 1/2 inches tall and about 7 1/4 inches diameter from handle to handle. If you look closely there are grapes and it feels very greek. Bottom of bowl reads Veronese Summit. These are not bronze or metal made but a very heavy material. Two items together weigh about 8 pounds.
