The carving is beautiful and elaborate with a crane perched on a leaf with a snake in its mouth and his wings slightly out by its sides. Between his feet is another snake. The back of the shelf has an open work floral design with a beaded border. The shelf at the top has high relief floral and beaded border. The top is smooth. The box is decorated with magnificent carving and inlaid brass strings. Depicting figure of an elephant on a top. Inside are two closed compartments for storage of precious items together with original mirror and letter rack, all that decorated with delicate carved work. Some flowers given by a loved one are still enclosed within these compartments. Marks: Not marked. Condition: The box is in original antique but very nice condition. With original mirror and encased flowers. Antique Burmese Nat: Carved Wood, Spirit Worship Buddhism Statue Doll Myanmar
I have two wonderful authentic antique Nats for sale this week. This sale is for the one pictured only. I bought these two in Burma in the early 90’s back when Burma saw fewer than 40.000 foreign visitors per year. At that time true antiques were easy to find but today it’s nearly impossible and sadly most are fakes. These two Nats are very weathered and this one is a little more rough- the paint on the left side of his face is nearly gone from age and environment and his hair has fallen from the bun/wrap. The paint is chipped in a few places so take a good look at the photos. I suspect they both sat under a Bo tree outdoors for many years but they are still wonderful to look at and are full of character. Burmese were animists who worshipped a series of nature spirits called Nats. These spirits became converted to Buddhism and thus became helpers of the monks. This was a deliberate policy on the part of King Anawratha and the rulers of Burma in the 11th century. At the same time, these spirits often have their own ceremonies and festivals and are worshipped in addition to the Buddha. There are 37 officially recognized Nats, each with its own history and image. The Nats, as spirits of natural forces, such as water, wind, stones and trees, take many guises. The Nats are all ghosts or spirits of heroes except for one, the chief Nat, Thagyamin Nat(the Indian god Indra, protector of royalty) who was elevated to this position in the 11th century by the great unifier, King Anawratha, who integrated Nat worship into Buddhism. They are divided between the 37 Great Nats and all the rest(i.e. Spirits of trees, water, etc. Almost all of the 37 Great Nats were human beings who met violent deaths. They may thus also be called nat sein. The word'sein' While meaning'green' is being used to mean'raw' in this context. There are however two types of nats in Burmese Buddhist belief. The Burmese mythological bird duck Hintha also known as Hamsa originated from where the Bago river once flowed strongly into the Yangon River and from there out to sea. At one time a huge area was mostly under water with only the tip of a hill rising out of the fast flowing river. The myth describes how a couple of Hintha birds or waterfowl with golden neck feathers. Were seen resting on the tip of the hill by two Princes who later founded the kingdom. The dry space on top of the hill was so small that the female bird had to perch on the back of her gallant mate. This gave rise to the unfounded rumor that Bago ladies would get the upper hand in marriage; maybe it would be more correct to say that Bago men make good husbands. The beautiful bird duck Hintha remains a beloved symbol of the Mon people. The very spot is immortalized by a pagoda. The Hintha Gon Paya. One of the greatest kings to rule from Bago was Dhammazedi who reigned from 1471 to 1492. T his is a listing for: Antique Burmese hand-carved teak wood figurine. The figure is a woman in what looks to be traditional tribal dress of the Karen-Padaung people. Including: Earrings which stretch her earlobes. Neck rings( In photo 2. You can see ridges carved into the front of the neck, which suggest these rings) Longyi skirt decorated with a simple floral motif in horizontal bands. Strap across the forehead. Which supports a basket hanging on her back(photos 6-8) In her hand. She holds what seems to be a pipe. The pipe is removable. And its stem can be inserted in either fist. ELEPHANT CHAIR Authentic Maharajah Elephant Chair purchased in Bangkok in the early 70’s and shipped to the USA. The chair was used to be attached on a elephant’s back and few people sat in it to be transported to another place and sometimes was used to hunt. It is an unbelievable piece of art. Made of solid wood(probably mahogany wood) and carved with golden leave flowers motives. Some discolored are present and not to be mistaken for scratches or damaged, and has 6(removable) knobs, with 2 of them slightly damaged on top. See last photo) This piece of art is usable to sit on it or just to display. We had this Elephant Chair at the end of our bed in our bedroom(pet and smoke free home) since the early 70’s. This is a lovely 19th Century Burmese hand carved teak wood box with Opium scale inside! The carved design of Poppies is on each side of the box. A small nail holds the ends as shown. Old metal scale inside with metal fulcrum. Plates, etc. Old twine or thread attached as shown. Balance seems to work great. A magnet does not stick to any of the metal. Vintage Carved Wood Figure Burmese Burma Dancer with Fan, possibly teak
Coming from an estate auction that included a lot of very nice Asian antiques. The only thing I actually know about her is she has a sticker on the bottom that has written on it: Burma. It may be from the prior owner, but the costuming looks correct to me for that, so I'm assuming it is correct. She looks in very good condition. With a soft patina? to the wood, I think it is teak, but not positive. The wood looks as it may have been burnt some prior to being carved, there is a black burnt area on a bottom corner and a bit showing near her waist. The only flaw, if it is one, is that the tip of her hair may have been broken off, but if so it was done quite a while back, but it may have been carved this way. 10 1/4" tall. Pair of 11" Antique 19th BURMESE KNEELING MONKS carved wood lacquered gilt
Beautiful pair of kneeling monks from Burma. Circa 19th century. Figures are carved wood. Which are covered in lacquer and gilt. Each monk wears a drape decorated with glass jewels. As seen in photos. Much of the gilt is worn. There is also some spots where lacquer is missing. Each monk has a split on its right shoulder and inner elbow. The monk that is not in the praying position has a split behind right ear. All splits appear to be stable. Figures measure approximately 11" tall. 10" from front to back, and 7" from side to side. They are divided between the 37 Great Nats and all the rest(i.e. Spirits of trees, water, etc. Almost all of the 37 Great Nats were human beings who met violent deaths( စိမ်းသေ. Lit. green death" They may thus also be called nat sein( နတ်စိမ်း; lit. green spirits) The word'sein' While meaning'green' is being used to mean'raw' in this context.
