I bought these two in Burma in the early 90’s ... moreback when Burma saw fewer than 40.000 foreign visitors per year. At that time true antiques were easy to find but today it’s nearly impossible and sadly most are fakes. These two Nats are very weathered and this one is a little more rough- the paint on the left side of his face is nearly gone from age and environment and his hair has fallen from the bun/wrap. The paint is chipped in a few places so take a good look at the photos. I suspect they both sat under a Bo tree outdoors for many years but they are still wonderful to look at and are full of character. He measures 13 inches tall from the bottom of his wood base to the top of his head. Please contact me if you have any questions. So finally I realised it was similar to the HSUN-OK After I went to an official jeweler and he told me it is gold-leaf on lacquerware. So I was happy of my found and I came back home to find more about this scarce item. The antiquarian told me it was coming from a King in Asia and after that man came in Canada and worked as a doctor in Montreal. He kept that collectable in his big house until he pass away at the age of 96. So I don’t know more about the history of this collectable. Probably from the 1890-1900. This very desirable and rare set of gold-leaf lacquerware pagoda bowl tray& ashtray is absolutely wonderful and would fit in any showroom of the world. Believe me. Dimensions: pagoda is 9'3/4 height. The Burmese mythological bird duck Hintha also known as Hamsa originated from where the Bago river once flowed strongly into the Yangon River and from there out to sea. At one time a huge area was mostly under water with only the tip of a hill rising out of the fast flowing river. The myth describes how a couple of Hintha birds or waterfowl with golden neck feathers. Were seen resting on the tip of the hill by two Princes who later founded the kingdom. The dry space on top of the hill was so small that the female bird had to perch on the back of her gallant mate. This gave rise to the unfounded rumor that Bago ladies would get the upper hand in marriage; maybe it would be more correct to say that Bago men make good husbands. The beautiful bird duck Hintha remains a beloved symbol of the Mon people. The very spot is immortalized by a pagoda. The Hintha Gon Paya. One of the greatest kings to rule from Bago was Dhammazedi who reigned from 1471 to 1492. ELEPHANT CHAIR Authentic Maharajah Elephant Chair purchased in Bangkok in the early 70’s and shipped to the USA. The chair was used to be attached on a elephant’s back and few people sat in it to be transported to another place and sometimes was used to hunt. It is an unbelievable piece of art. Made of solid wood(probably mahogany wood) and carved with golden leave flowers motives. Some discolored are present and not to be mistaken for scratches or damaged, and has 6(removable) knobs, with 2 of them slightly damaged on top. See last photo) This piece of art is usable to sit on it or just to display. We had this Elephant Chair at the end of our bed in our bedroom(pet and smoke free home) since the early 70’s.
