19TH CENTURY BURMESE BRONZE OPIUM WEIGHT 20 TICAL HINTHA DUCK 345.9 GMS
Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge From a Tucson estate some years ago and collected during the 1950's or so is this compelling antique Burmese bronze 20 Tical so called opium weight. An I believe Mid 19th Century proposition in every sense. The figural weight is conceived as a Hintha duck and shows a frieze of notches at the top of the round base. This corresponds very well to type"H3B" on Hartmut Mollat's model chronology chart, so dating circa 1850 or so(prior to 1868) there is no verification mark evident, but in this case that is a good thing- Mollat says it is usually missing on this type. The offered necessity of trade and commerce fulfills all of Mollat's criterea for the H3B type. If you know the genre and understand ... morethe significance of such a genuine example, the offered beauty needs no further descriptors. Weight is correct for a 20 Tical weight at about 345.9 grams on my portable digital scale; this is just slightly to the heavy side of proper, but not overly so. Condition is quite fine with an aura of good age to the bronze surfaces, that come by honestly, the underside of the base exhibits the sort of charismatic evidence of genuine wear as proper and desired. There are no hidden restorations. There are otherwise just typical and expected signs of period purposeful use and then long display in that Tucson home, all speaking to the history and here simply more evidence of the real thing. Size is about 2 11/16 in. high. If you collect the material culture of old Burma and especially these icons of the opium trade, or simply wish this single improvement the ambiance of a room in your home, this will have great meaning for you. I am fascinated with it.the more the historical information, the more you know to make the best bid. Opium Weights from Burma These interesting animal weights have long attracted the curiosity of travellers to Burma and are now very much coveted by collectors as they become harder to find. The term‘opium' weight is somewhat a misnomer. It arouses the romantic notion that these weights were used to weigh and measure out wads of acrid smelling opium that would then be smoked on platform beds in darkened dens. The term"opium" weight was probably coined by a foreigner with a lively imagination and an allure for the mystical East. While it is true that ... moresome of the smaller weights were used for measuring the heady sap. opium" weights served a much wider, more useful and down to earth purpose. Originally they were used to weigh relatively high value products such as silver ingots which were used as currencies. Early European traders reported the use of these weights for measuring foreign gold and silver coins, pearls, rubies, coral, personal ornaments, spices, camphor, musk and costly medicines. More common products were weighed with dome shaped marble weights. Items were measured by a beam hung with two baskets or trays. Early adventurers to the court of Pegu in the 16th century noted that silver bullion was weighed with these“curious animal weights” Yule. The Burmese destroyed the local weight standards and the conquered regions had to adopt the Burmese standards.Traditional weights in bronze stopped being made soon after the British took over Burma in 1885. BURMA. CAMBODIA. CHINA. INDIA. INDONESIA. JAPAN. KOREA. LANKA. LAO. THAILAND. TIBET. Antique Bronze Burmese Quadrupeds'Toe' Opium Weight. 303g. Pegu District, 19th Century. Overview: The Burmese mythical beast the Crested Quadrupeds. Also known as'Toe' a sacred animal from Burmese folklore that inhabited the Himalayan forest; is considered the rarest of opium weights, identified by the face of a lion, curling beard, horns, protrusions of the head, hooves, and the tail of a horse. A fabulous creature symbolic of purity, divine knowledge and cosmic breath. XXX The mountain tribes of the Golden Triangle Region. Burma, Lao, and Thailand, originally intended the use of these miniature animal figures to weigh'opium' during the 18th-19th centuries, a time when the forbidden Opium trade was flourishing in such occupied territories ... morewhich straddled the Thai-Burmese border. XXX The phrase'Opium Weight' used to describe the small. Curious-looking metal animal and bird figures is somewhat misleading- while the weights actually serve a much wider, more useful purpose; they were used to gauge the weight of daily items of commerce found in the Burmese market-place, such as food, raw materials, spices, musk, gemstone, metal, both ordinary and precious, and expensive medicine, all of which were sold in quanities determined by these weights. Items were measured by a beam hung with two baskets or trays, the correct weight was placed in one basket and the other basket filled with the desired material until the two baskets balanced. Description: The Quadruped: Boldly modelled to resembles the Burmese lion which guards the entrances to temples throughout Burma. The round plump body. Long tail, rounded hooves are more like that of a horse, the head is crowned with a pair of horns, below which are small pointed ears, decorated with sprigs of foliage curling from a grinning mouth, delicately detailed with bulging eyes, crested headdress, and arched tail plumage. Hooves are firmly planted on a solid tappered

Antique Burmese Opium Weight Scale - Rare
I acquired this antique opium weight scale in Mandalay. Burma in the early 1970's. The scale is believed to date from the 19th century, possibly to early 20th century. It is complete and in working condition and has been well used. The case is carved from hardwood to custom fit the scale pieces, and is lacquered. The lacquer is worn and the brass scale parts are oxidized as can be seen in the photos. Scale is complete. Case measures about 7-1/4"x3-1/4"x1-1/2" Scale beam measures about 6-1/4"long and pans about 2-1/2" in diameter.
