An I believe Mid 19th Century proposition in every sense. The figural weight is conceived as a Hintha duck and shows a frieze of notches at the top of the round base. This corresponds very well to type"H3B" on Hartmut Mollat's model chronology chart, so dating circa 1850 or so(prior to 1868) there is no verification mark evident, but in this case that is a good thing- Mollat says it is usually missing on this type. The offered necessity of trade and commerce fulfills all of Mollat's criterea for the H3B type. If you know the genre and understand ... morethe significance of such a genuine example, the offered beauty needs no further descriptors. Weight is correct for a 20 Tical weight at about 345.9 grams on my portable digital scale; this is just slightly to the heavy side of proper, but not overly so. Condition is quite fine with an aura of good age to the bronze surfaces, that come by honestly, the underside of the base exhibits the sort of charismatic evidence of genuine wear as proper and desired. There are no hidden restorations. There are otherwise just typical and expected signs of period purposeful use and then long display in that Tucson home, all speaking to the history and here simply more evidence of the real thing. Size is about 2 11/16 in. high. If you collect the material culture of old Burma and especially these icons of the opium trade, or simply wish this single improvement the ambiance of a room in your home, this will have great meaning for you. The term‘opium' weight is somewhat a misnomer. It arouses the romantic notion that these weights were used to weigh and measure out wads of acrid smelling opium that would then be smoked on platform beds in darkened dens. The term"opium" weight was probably coined by a foreigner with a lively imagination and an allure for the mystical East. It is thought Buddhist art in India gave rise to the Burmese choices of animal motifs to use on their weights. Among the Royal Weights of Burma. The Pyu style weight is very rare. According to Gear, this style is among the earliest, dating to the reign of Shinsawbu 1453-60. It is characterized in Group 6, period M of Gear’s system. The weight is a bird form with a vertical tail with 3 head knobs. Mounted on an octagonal drum shaped base. The weight is constructed of bronze covering a pegmatite(stone) core. Antique Burmese Opium Weight Scale - Rare
I acquired this antique opium weight scale in Mandalay. Burma in the early 1970's. The scale is believed to date from the 19th century, possibly to early 20th century. It is complete and in working condition and has been well used. The case is carved from hardwood to custom fit the scale pieces, and is lacquered. The lacquer is worn and the brass scale parts are oxidized as can be seen in the photos. Scale is complete. Case measures about 7-1/4"x3-1/4"x1-1/2" Scale beam measures about 6-1/4"long and pans about 2-1/2" in diameter.
