Ornate, elaborately carved, antique bench, believed to be Burmese in origin.
This bench was purchased in Chiang Mai in 1996 and is believed to be from Burma. It measures approx. 74" long by 26" wide by 48.5" tall. It is part of a unique dining set. The arms. Legs and back feature detailed carvings of people, animals and flowers/vegetation. There are intricate mother-of-pearl inlays. The legs take the form of elephant heads and trunks. The feet take the form of mythical creatures. The piece is currently in climate-controlled storage on Long Island, New York. Other pieces from the set are available separately. Four priests point to the four directions of the compass and appear to be sitting on an open lotus blossom. There is great detail on their dress. Even their shoes. Their faces are fixed in a peaceful expression, hands folded and pointing up in typical prayer position. They are wearing the high tiered hats seen so often in Siam and countries ... morenearby. I believe they may be Buddhist as Buddha is depicted differently than China and India. At one time Burma kept Indian captives after defeating them in battle and their influence is apparent. I am not sure what type of wood it is. It seems sturdy enough and has a lovely reddish cast which does not appear to be from staining. The lamp stands 31" to the top of the harp. It does not have a finial. I think I would find some unusual one, a piece of mineral or a wood carving would be perfect. The lamp works perfectly. The plug appears to be from the 50's. I do not know how old the lamp but I think this plug was not the original wiring. It is certainly an unusual piece. Email me with any questions and thanks for shopping with me. The carving is beautiful and elaborate with a crane perched on a leaf with a snake in its mouth and his wings slightly out by its sides. Between his feet is another snake. The back of the shelf has an open work floral design with a beaded border. The shelf at the top has high relief floral and beaded border. The top is smooth. The hairpin is made from animal bone and hair with incised geometric decoration on both the front and reverse. The hairpin is from the Naga people of Nagaland in far north-eastern India& north-western Burma. The Naga people are comprised of a series of several different ethnic tribes that live in the region and have historically practiced headhunting. The structure of their society. From their strong warrior tradition to their struggle for identity in the face of Christian missionaries, is very interesting. The box is decorated with magnificent carving and inlaid brass strings. Depicting figure of an elephant on a top. Inside are two closed compartments for storage of precious items together with original mirror and letter rack, all that decorated with delicate carved work. I have two wonderful authentic antique Nats for sale this week. This sale is for the one pictured only. I bought these two in Burma in the early 90’s back when Burma saw fewer than 40.000 foreign visitors per year. At that time true antiques were easy to find but today it’s nearly impossible and sadly most are fakes. These two Nats are very weathered and this one is a little more rough- the paint on the left side of his face is nearly gone from age and environment and his hair has fallen from the bun/wrap. The paint is chipped in a few places so take a good look at the photos. I suspect they both sat under a Bo tree outdoors for many years but they are still wonderful to look at and are full of character. With meditative facial expression, emphasized by the half-closed eyes which look downward, much original lacquer& some gilt remaining in excellent condition. He his carved from one large tree trunk or piece of native wood. Heavy& Thick Lacquer and was gilted. He was appraised by Bonhams and Butterfield 15 years ago for Mr Rothschild. I'm in the process of finding that appraisal but it was for significantly more money. This classic Burmese bronze Buddha from the late 17th/early 19th century. Primitive Wood Burmese Buddha Wonderfully unusual hand-carved Buddha from Burma in the early 1900s. This carving is unique because most statues from Burmese homes depict Buddha in the more popular Bhurmisparsha Mudra(posture) This one is in the Dhyana Murdra(posture) with both hands placed on the lap. Palms facing upwards. This posture symbolizes the perfect balance of thought, rest of the senses, and tranquility. A mudra of meditation and concentration- serenity. Vintage Carved Wood Figure Burmese Burma Dancer with Fan, possibly teak
Coming from an estate auction that included a lot of very nice Asian antiques. The only thing I actually know about her is she has a sticker on the bottom that has written on it: Burma. It may be from the prior owner, but the costuming looks correct to me for that, so I'm assuming it is correct. She looks in very good condition. With a soft patina? to the wood, I think it is teak, but not positive. The wood looks as it may have been burnt some prior to being carved, there is a black burnt area on a bottom corner and a bit showing near her waist. The only flaw, if it is one, is that the tip of her hair may have been broken off, but if so it was done quite a while back, but it may have been carved this way. 10 1/4" tall. This is a very high quality antique 19th century hand carved solid white marble stone Burmese Buddha sculpture. it is carved from one solid piece of beautiful white marble and is extremely heavy weighing 30 pounds. it has a lovely hand applied gold leaf finish which has nice gold and orange colors. it also has a hand laid cut mirror pattern wrapping around his head. it is carved with an abundance of intricate detailing and is beautifully carved. Beautiful pair of kneeling monks from Burma. Circa 19th century. Figures are carved wood. Which are covered in lacquer and gilt. Each monk wears a drape decorated with glass jewels. As seen in photos. Much of the gilt is worn. There is also some spots where lacquer is missing. Each monk has a split on its right shoulder and inner elbow. The monk that is not in the praying position has a split behind right ear. All splits appear to be stable. Figures measure approximately 11" tall. 10" from front to back, and 7" from side to side. They are divided between the 37 Great Nats and all the rest(i.e. Spirits of trees, water, etc. Almost all of the 37 Great Nats were human beings who met violent deaths( စိမ်းသေ. Lit. green death" They may thus also be called nat sein( နတ်စိမ်း; lit. green spirits) The word'sein' While meaning'green' is being used to mean'raw' in this context. There are however two types of nats in Burmese Buddhist belief.
