18TH CENTURY BURMESE BRONZE OPIUM WEIGHT 10 TICAL CHINTHE TOE LION C2A
Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge From a Tucson estate some years ago and collected during the 1950's or so is this highly attractive antique Burmese bronze 10 Tikal so called opium weight. An I believe 18th Century proposition in every sense. The figural weight is conceived as a Chinthe lion(some called it a Toe) this one looking like"C2A" and so ascribed to circa 1760 or very slightly thereafter on Hartmut Mollat's chronological dating chart; this would be within the reign of King Hsinbyushin. It has a 9-ray star verification mark exactly as mentioned in Mollat's text. This Southeast Asian necessity of trade and commerce is a classic example of a scholarly identified vairety. If you ... moreknow the genre and understand the significance of these weights, the offered beauty needs no further descriptors. Weight is correct for a 10 Tikal weight at about 155.3 grams on my portable digital scale; interestingly, this weight has an ancient lead plug between the legs to bring it to proper weight range. Condition is quite fine with an aura of good age to the bronze surfaces, that come by honestly; the undersirde of the base has now achieved the sort of charismatic wear that cannot be mistaken for any modern pastiche copy. There are no hidden restorations. There are just typical and expected signs of period purposeful use and then long display in that Tucson home, all speaking to the history and here simply more evidence of the real thing. Size is about 2 1/8 in. high. If you collect the material culture of old Burma and especially these sculptural icons of trade, or simply wish this single improvement the ambiance of a room in your home, this will have great meaning for you. Payment Terms, PAYMENT WITHIN 10 DAYS OF AUCTION CLOSING. I ACCEPT PAYPAL AS PER EBAY RULES. Shipping Terms, THIS ITEM U.S. ONLY; INTERESTED INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS PLEASE EMAIL.
