Small Vintage Brass Hintha Bird Opium Weight Burmese/Thai: 24mm/ 17 g This is a pretty cast brass or bronze weight. With nice modelling and patination- ... moreIt is old but probably not antique- almost certainly made in the 20th century. Size: 24 mm( 2.4 cm) high weight: 17 grammes. Payment must be made within 7 days of winning bid unless other arrangements have been made. If there is a problem with payment. Please contact me. I am quite reasonable and willing to help sort out any problems, but If I receive no contact after 7 days have passed, a non-payment case will be opened and I will offer the item to the next highest bidder. Payments from overseas must be made with paypal unless other arrangements are agreed with me prior to bidding. U.K payments can be made via paypal, personal cheque or postal order. Cash on collection is also possible by arrangement, but only for heavy items which would otherwise incur high postal charges. Combined Shipping for items: If you buy more than one item from me. Please wait to be invoiced before paying so that I can apply an appropriate postage discount. I will combine multiple purchases to help reduce postage costs where possible, as it is usually possible to post several small items in one parcel for less than the cost of sending them in separate parcels. Note: Overseas shipments have to weigh less than 2kg packed weight to be sent by Airmail, otherwise they have to go by courier, which is usually much more expensive. For overseas shipments, It is best to ask first if I can combine your items before you bid. Postage Costs: I keep my postage costs to a reasonable level- but they do have to reflect the costs of lightweight packaging materials and the time spent packing the item properly so that it will arrive with you in one piece. I usually add about one pound on top of what Royal Mail charge as the shipping cost. It is not my aim to make a profit out of shipping costs, but I do spend many hours packing items and my time is valuable too. Recorded delivery: I always obtain pro

The weights are made of a cupriferous alloy and were intended not only for trading purposes but also for religious and political reasons conveying as part of their message the powers of the devine spirit in heaven and the earthly god-king. There are three basic shapes which together make up 95% of the pieces found on the market today: Hantha(mythical ducklike bird) Ziwazo(mythical chickenlike bird) and To, or Chinthe, a dog-lion prominent also in Chinese mythology. There are variations within each type in the general shape of the animal, the geometry of the base, and practical features such as a tail extended to form a handle on some larger weights They all stand on plinths or bases of different shapes. OLD BURMA OPIUM WEIGHT ANIMAL BRID BRONZE
OLD BURMA OPIUM WEIGHT ANIMAL BRID BRONZE The term opium weight is somewhat a misnomer. While there is little doubt that Burmese animal weights were used to measure opium. Their use was more widely applied to weighing a variety of substances including silver ingots, pearls, precious stones, coral, spices, musk and expensive medicines. Dome shaped marble weights were used to weigh more commonplace items. The earliest known opium weights date back to at least the 14th century. Though unfortunately it is believed that many of the earlier weights were melted down to be remolded into new shapes. The production of opium weights ceased shortly after the British forcefully incorporated Burma into the British Raj in 1885. Royal animal weights were made from bronze using the lost wax method and great lengths were taken to ensure the accuracy of the ... moreweight. The weights and measures system was scrutinized by the king and each time a new king took the throne. A new set of weights were made in a style of his choosing. A master set of weights was produced, which were kept in the Hlut-taw or Supreme Council of State and all weights produced henceforth had to conform to this standard. The mass unit in Burma is referred to as the kyat or tical. A term known to be in use since 1515AD. The tical mass varied from 10.4 grams in the 15th century to 16.3 grams in 1830. One hundred tical was referred to as 1 viss, which was about 3.5 pounds. Burmese opium weights appear in the form of either a bird or a mythical beast referred to by various names including‘lions’ Chinthè. To or to- naya and to-aung. Confusion arises about other forms of bronze weights seen. Which are actually Siamese(Thai) and include elephants, dogs, snakes, goats and monkeys. The bird form in Buddhism represents purity and a link between heaven and earth. It was thought that the bird weight possessed the power to distinguish between substances of superior or inferior quality, for example the purity of gold and silver. The beast weight is thought to represent the b

19TH CENTURY BURMESE BRONZE OPIUM WEIGHT 20 TICAL HINTHA DUCK 345.9 GMS
Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge Click to Enlarge From a Tucson estate some years ago and collected during the 1950's or so is this compelling antique Burmese bronze 20 Tical so called opium weight. An I believe Mid 19th Century proposition in every sense. The figural weight is conceived as a Hintha duck and shows a frieze of notches at the top of the round base. This corresponds very well to type"H3B" on Hartmut Mollat's model chronology chart, so dating circa 1850 or so(prior to 1868) there is no verification mark evident, but in this case that is a good thing- Mollat says it is usually missing on this type. The offered necessity of trade and commerce fulfills all of Mollat's criterea for the H3B type. If you know the genre and understand ... morethe significance of such a genuine example, the offered beauty needs no further descriptors. Weight is correct for a 20 Tical weight at about 345.9 grams on my portable digital scale; this is just slightly to the heavy side of proper, but not overly so. Condition is quite fine with an aura of good age to the bronze surfaces, that come by honestly, the underside of the base exhibits the sort of charismatic evidence of genuine wear as proper and desired. There are no hidden restorations. There are otherwise just typical and expected signs of period purposeful use and then long display in that Tucson home, all speaking to the history and here simply more evidence of the real thing. Size is about 2 11/16 in. high. If you collect the material culture of old Burma and especially these icons of the opium trade, or simply wish this single improvement the ambiance of a room in your home, this will have great meaning for you. While it is true that some of the smaller weights were used for measuring the heady sap. opium" weights served a much wider, more useful and down to earth purpose. Originally they were used to weigh relatively high value products such as silver ingots which were used as currencies. Early European traders reported the use of these weights for measuring foreign gold and silver coins, pearls, rubies, coral, personal ornaments, spices, camphor, musk and costly medicines. More common products were weighed with dome shaped marble weights. Items were measured by a beam hung with two baskets or trays. The royal animal weights were made using the lost wax technique. Overview: The Burmese mythical beast the Crested Quadrupeds. Also known as'Toe' a sacred animal from Burmese folklore that inhabited the Himalayan forest; is considered the rarest of opium weights, identified by the face of a lion, curling beard, horns, protrusions of the head, hooves, and the tail of a horse. A fabulous creature symbolic of purity, divine knowledge and cosmic breath. XXX The mountain tribes of the Golden Triangle Region. Burma, Lao, and Thailand, originally intended the use of these miniature animal figures to weigh'opium' during the 18th-19th centuries, a time when the forbidden Opium trade was flourishing in such occupied territories ... morewhich straddled the Thai-Burmese border. XXX The phrase'Opium Weight' used to describe the small. According to Gear, this style is among the earliest, dating to the reign of Shinsawbu 1453-60. It is characterized in Group 6, period M of Gear’s system. The weight is a bird form with a vertical tail with 3 head knobs. Mounted on an octagonal drum shaped base. The weight is constructed of bronze covering a pegmatite(stone) core. There ... moreare 4 panels of characters, 2 in possibly early Mon script and 2 of a bird figure, around the sides of the base. The Bird has lost its tail at some point in the distant past, with the rear portion of the bird showing heavy patina from exposure over the years. The images on the sides of the drum are very worn. The 2 bird figures can be readily seen, but the round cartouche which contains the typical snake symbol can barely be seen, and only portions of the more rectangular cartouche of script can be see.
