About Shan miniatures: ... moreSmall narrative antique Shan bronze depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha were used as votive deposits from pagoda relics chambers. Technically. They are both cast and wrought, with the figures usually set on openwork bases. More than the narrative& votive aspects, they all share a somewhat crude but lively style. Extract of Burmese bronze sculpture in the British Museum by T. Richard Blurton These poetic and figurative expressions. The relationship of the Buddha's life in a poetic language, the presence of embellishments, exaggerations, allowed the preservation of these stories today. Story: There was many Buddhas before Gautama Buddha. Dipankara. He who brings light" is the first Buddha. It is the protector of travelers and is associated with charity. Dipankara is best known for giving the prophecy to the Gautama contemporary incarnation. Dipankara is represented most often standing with his right hand making the mudra of fearlessness(abbhaya) Like Gautama, He is a prince who is an ascetic vocation and eventually found enlightenment in the shade of a tree. Gautama was at this time incarned in a young Brahmin named Sumedha. Having realized the futility of his existence, there was wandering ascetic. After many adventures, he finally arrived in the town of Amaravati where the people were repairing the streets. They explained to him that the Buddha Dipankara was expected in the city where his father reigned when he was Prince. Enthused, Sumedha decided to buy flowers to offer, but found no flowers to buy, the king having requisitioned all the flowers for its own offering. But to his surprise, arrived on the scene where Dipankara will come, Sumedha saw a girl holding beautiful lotus. He wanted to buy them, but the girl, having recognized his value, proposed to offer five of her flowers in exchange for a promise that in all his successive lives

Antique Burmese Lacquer Octagonal Folding Table Temple Worshipers
Background Information: The art of lacquer is found throughout Europe and Asia. And the lacquer produced in Myanmar(Burma) is among the best in Eurasia. Known as"Pan-Yun" in Burmese, it is one of the highes forms of art in Myanmar. It requires great skill on the part of the artist. Black lacquer is the most commonly used, but an orange lacquer, like this piece(normally called"Red lacquer" is also used. Both come from the sap of the Melanorrohea Usitata tree, a tropical hardwood. The artist begins with a bamboo or, rarely, teak base. He then coats with with a layer of lacquer mixed with ashes and leaves it in a cellar to dry. He repeats this until there are 5 layers, then he adds two more layers of pure lacquer. When it comes time to add color, the artist scratches out lines for one color with a very fine knife, then mixes ... moreone colorant with water and spreads the paste over the item. After letting it set for several days, he wipes off the colorant(which remains in the lines) puts a resin over the colored lines, and starts over with the next color. This continues until all the colors are added. He then polishes the piece with fine talcum powder to remove the resin and make the item shine. The result is what you see here. Piece Description: Red lacquer finish, scene depicting buddhist temple worshipers. Table stands at 14 3/4" and measures 15 1/8" across. BURMA. CAMBODIA. CHINA. INDIA. INDONESIA. JAPAN. KOREA. LANKA. LAO. THAILAND. TIBET. WORLD-CUP SALE- PRICE REDUCED FROM $7.900.00- BUY WHILE IT LAST. Rare Burmese Shan States Dry Lacquer Head of Buddha. Ava Style, 18-19th Century. Description: A magnificant and rather large Shan States Buddha Head. Rendered in traditional'Ava' style, hollow, made of dry lacquer and cloth, a technique used in Burma called'Thayo' Which is a type of relief-moulded lacquer. The actual process, still well-preserved and visible inside the head, entailed the use of several layers of lacquer soaked cloth, applied by hand over a clay core, dried, before a malleable layer of lacquer, which is a mixture of sap from the Melanorrhoea Usitate tree. Teak sawdust, and straw ash, was formed as a putty, and used in creating the basic facial shape, and later ... moreafter drying, the finer facial features and detailed hair curls, were also formed in Thayo. When the lacquer image hardened, the inner clay core was removed. Typically associated with 18th century and earlier influences of the'Ava' style. The head is sensitively modeled with softly contoured face and serene contemplative expression, with arched eyebrows bowed high towards the forehead, set above heavy-lidded downcast eyes, bow-shaped lips and small mouth, with almost Mona Lisa aspects to the smile, a broad treatment of the nose, and prominent ears. A thick band separates the forehead from the hairline, with the head covered in thorn-like hair curls, surmounted by a domed ushnisha and stylized lotus bud finial, a separate piece, called a'Kecil' pinnacle) carved of teakwood and sits in the sculpted hole on the top of the head. The surface has a beautifully aged gilded patina, over the originally varnished dark black lacquer pigment. Hollow lacquer Buddha images were made by a group of village's just outside Ye-U township in the Monywa District. Approximately 136 kilometres north west of Mandalay. Many of the craftsman were not professional artisans, but farmers
