Up for listing is a Burmese- shan-Kachin Dao Sword. It's in good condition.the scabbard is simple. The blade is a nicely sculpted blade from thick towards the hilt(6 pennies thick) 5/16ths approx.Thehandle is what appears to be a whitish-yellow brass with water buffalo in the center.The bade is approx. 24 inches.The overall size is 32 and 1/2 inches. There appears to be some copper and silver inlay near the hilt. It's weighted quite nicely. The edge is somewhat sharp. It feels quite nice in the hand.Age unknown.difficult to tell.it's a nice sword.

The design is typical of the geometric designs produced by Shan artisans. The lid is very finely detailed and on each side is bird like figure that I think is meant to be the" bird shaped barge" that takes sacred objects away during the Phaung Daw U festival at Inle Lake in September. The original interior tray is missing. The Betel Box held"the various items necessary to make quids of betel(for chewing) Measurements: 3 1/2 inches high and 3 1/4 inches deep. Carved from hardwood, lacquered, painted and gilded in the Shan State of Burma. He is 9 inches tall and dates to the 1700's. He was taken out of that country before the interdiction of exports was imposed in the'90's. The Shan State is located in the northeast of Burma(Myanmar) It covers 155.800 km, almost a quarter of the total area of that country. The state gets its name from the Shan people, the largest of several ethnic groups that inhabit the hills and plateaus of the largely rural area. Description: A magnificant early 19th to 20th century Burmese Shan States Buddha Head fragment. Modeled in traditional'Ava' style, hollow, made of dry lacquer, a technique used in Burma called'Thayo' Which is a type of relief-moulded lacquer. xxxx The actual process. Entailed the use of layers of lacquer soaked cloth, applied by hand over a clay core, dried, before a malleable layer of lacquer, which is a mixture of sap from the'Melanorrhoea Usitate tree' teak sawdust, and straw ash, was formed as a putty, and used in creating final facial details and hair-curls, once dry, several coats of filtered high grade lacquer would have been applied, alowed ... moreto harden, than the gold leaf applied. When the sculpture hardened completely the clay core was removed. The head is sensitively rendered with a softly contoured face and serene contemplative expression. With arched eyebrows bowed high towards the forehead, set above heavy-lidded eyes, a narrow well-shaped nose, bow-shaped lips with an insipid smile, and prominent elongated ears. The head is covered in thorn-like hair curls, surmounted by a domed'Ushnisha' rising to a stylized lotus bud finial, which is a separate piece, called a'Kecil' pinnacle) carved of teakwood sits in the sculpted hole on the top of the head. The surface has a beautifully aged gilded gold patina, re-applied over the original silver lacquer underlayment, and the varnished black lacquer pigment base coat; with detailing of the lips finely painted in red lacquer pigment, and with silver eyes accented by black pupils. ANTIQUE 19TH CENTURY MANDALAY BURMESE GILT ALABASTER SITTING SHAN BUDDHA MONK Welcome to my auction- Up for your consideration is this exquisite 19th century relief carved image of a Burmese Shan Buddha done in the Mandalay style. The Buddha is sitting in the Mara Vijaya posture(calling the earth to witness) meditating on a lotus throne wrapped in a gold gilt highlighted robe. The sculpture is beautifully executed from a single block of alabaster with a calming. Serene facial expression and fine detailing. The surface is relatively smooth with some chisel marks present in the small openings and on the back and bottom. It has a wonderful, naturally aged patina. The sculpture came from the estate of a well traveled military admiral and is believed to date to the 19th century, no identifying marks. Carved from hardwood, lacquered and gilded in the Shan State of Burma. It was taken out of that country before the interdiction of exports was imposed in the'90's. The Shan State is located in the northeast of Burma(Myanmar) It covers 155.800 km, almost a quarter of the total area of that country. The state gets its name from the Shan people, the largest of several ethnic groups that inhabit the hills and plateaus of the largely rural area. Burmese art history after the 13th Century has traditionally been divided into segments that employ the name of the then dominant kingdom such as the Pinya Period(14 th century) The First Ava Period(15 th century) The Toungoo and second Ava Periods(16 ... moreth century) The Nyaungyan Period(17 th century) and the Konbaung Period(18 th- 19 th centuries) These divisions are not particularly useful in discussing the visual arts because styles often continued unchanged from one period to another.
