About Shan miniatures: ... moreSmall narrative antique Shan bronze depicting scenes from the life of the Buddha were used as votive deposits from pagoda relics chambers. Technically. The relationship of the Buddha's life in a poetic language, the presence of embellishments, exaggerations, allowed the preservation of these stories today. Story: There was many Buddhas before Gautama Buddha. Dipankara. He who brings light" is the first Buddha. It is the protector of travelers and is associated with charity. Dipankara is best known for giving the prophecy to the Gautama contemporary incarnation. Dipankara is represented most often standing with his right hand making the mudra of fearlessness(abbhaya) Like Gautama, He is a prince who is an ascetic vocation and eventually found enlightenment in the shade of a tree. Gautama was at this time incarned in a young Brahmin named Sumedha. Having realized the futility of his existence, there was wandering ascetic. After many adventures, he finally arrived in the town of Amaravati where the people were repairing the streets. They explained to him that the Buddha Dipankara was expected in the city where his father reigned when he was Prince. Enthused, Sumedha decided to buy flowers to offer, but found no flowers to buy, the king having requisitioned all the flowers for its own offering. But to his surprise, arrived on the scene where Dipankara will come, Sumedha saw a girl holding beautiful lotus. He wanted to buy them, but the girl, having recognized his value, proposed to offer five of her flowers in exchange for a promise that in all his successive lives

BURMA. CAMBODIA. CHINA. INDIA. INDONESIA. JAPAN. KOREA. LANKA. LAO. THAILAND. TIBET. Magnificent Burmese Marble Statue of a Shan Buddha. Myanmar 19th ... moreCentury. Description: Exquisite 19th century relief carved image of a Burmese Shan Buddha. Meditating on a Lotus Throne, beautifully executed with impressive authority, from a single block of dense Marble. The image has a relatively smooth finished surface, with precise details carved in the face and outlined areas of the figure. Incised lines are used to delineate the facial features, outlining of the garment and bottom hem of the robe. Chisel marks are present over the creviced areas of the figure, and the entire back surface. Wonderful naturally aged weathered patina, with gold gilding remnants. xxxx The sculpture is fragmented at the lower rear section and bottom portion of the stone- whether intentional by the creators hands. Of a spiritual entity emerging from the stone, or a repercussion of age from whence it was broken. BUDDHA: Burmese Shan Sammasamadhi, Painted & Gilded Wood,1700's,Beautiful Patina
BUDDHA: Burmese Shan Sammasamadhi. Painted& Gilded Wood. 1700's, Beautiful Patina This is a splendid and venerable statue of the Lord Buddha. Carved from hardwood, lacquered, painted and gilded in the Shan State of Burma. He is 9 inches tall and dates to the 1700's. He was taken out of that country before the interdiction of exports was imposed in the'90's. The Shan State is located in the northeast of Burma(Myanmar) It covers 155.800 km, almost a quarter of the total area of that country. The state gets its name from the Shan people, the largest of several ethnic groups that inhabit the hills and plateaus of the largely rural area. Burmese art history after the 13th Century has traditionally been divided into segments that employ the name of the then dominant kingdom such as the Pinya Period(14 th century) The First Ava ... morePeriod(15 th century) The Toungoo and second Ava Periods(16 th century) The Nyaungyan Period(17 th century) and the Konbaung Period(18 th- 19 th centuries) These divisions are not particularly useful in discussing the visual arts because styles often continued unchanged from one period to another. Several styles were produced simultaneously, and innovations were not necessarily repeated, even during the era of their initiation. This is true of almost all Southeast Asian art. Our Buddha has many of the characteristics of the art from the Ava Period(c.1287-1752) Named for The Kingdom of Ava which was established at the city of Ava by 1364, more or less in the center of modern Burma. The kingdom lacked easily defensible borders, however, and was overrun by the Shan in 1526. During this later period, there were fewer contacts with other kingdoms and especially with India, and several particularly Burmese image styles evolved. The two most prominent of these styles are the Ava and the Jambupati. Our Buddha is a good example of the Ava style. The predominant religion of most of continental Southeast Asia is Theravada Buddhism. From the Pali and Sanskrit languages, meaning literally,

Description: A magnificant early 19th to 20th century Burmese Shan States Buddha Head fragment. Modeled in traditional'Ava' style, hollow, made of dry lacquer, a technique used in Burma called'Thayo' Which is a type of relief-moulded lacquer. xxxx The actual process. Entailed the use of layers of lacquer soaked cloth, applied by hand over a clay core, dried, before a malleable layer of lacquer, which is a mixture of sap from the'Melanorrhoea Usitate tree' teak sawdust, and straw ash, was formed as a putty, and used in creating final facial details and hair-curls, once dry, several coats of filtered high grade lacquer would have been applied, alowed ... moreto harden, than the gold leaf applied. When the sculpture hardened completely the clay core was removed. The head is sensitively rendered with a softly contoured face and serene contemplative expression. With arched eyebrows bowed high towards the forehead, set above heavy-lidded eyes, a narrow well-shaped nose, bow-shaped lips with an insipid smile, and prominent elongated ears. The head is covered in thorn-like hair curls, surmounted by a domed'Ushnisha' rising to a stylized lotus bud finial, which is a separate piece, called a'Kecil' pinnacle) carved of teakwood sits in the sculpted hole on the top of the head. The surface has a beautifully aged gilded gold patina, re-applied over the original silver lacquer underlayment, and the varnished black lacquer pigment base coat; with detailing of the lips finely painted in red lacquer pigment, and with silver eyes accented by black pupils. BUDDHA: Burmese Shan Vajrapradama. Painted& Gilded Wood. 1700's, Beautiful Patina This is a splendid and venerable statue of the Lord Buddha. Carved from hardwood, lacquered, painted and gilded in the Shan State of Burma. He is 8 1/4 inches tall and dates to the 1700's. He was taken out of that country before the interdiction of export of antiquities was imposed in the'90's. The Shan State is located in the northeast of Burma(Myanmar) It covers 155.800 km, almost a quarter of the total area of that country. The state gets its name from the Shan people, the largest of several ethnic groups that inhabit the hills and plateaus of the largely rural area. Burmese art history after the 13th Century has traditionally been divided into segments that employ the name of the then dominant kingdom such as the Pinya Period(14 th century) ... moreThe First Ava Period(15 th century) The Toungoo and second Ava Periods(16 th century) The Nyaungyan Period(17 th century) and the Konbaung Period(18 th- 19 th centuries) These divisions are not particularly useful in discussing the visual arts because styles often continued unchanged from one period to another. From the Pali and Sanskrit languages,
