Exquisitely crafted, depicting the mythical'Hintha' Bird, also known as Hamsa, an aquatic bird which inhabited the Himalaya Forest of southern Burma, and was considered by Burmese to be a sacred animal symbolic of purity, divine knowledge and cosmic breath. Royal animal and aquatic shaped weights of the Burmese empire, are one of the most interesting and unusual numismatic collectibles, of which belonged to the prestigious royal families, governors, nobleman, and rich households. The phrase'Opium Weight' used to describe the small, curious-looking metal animal and bird figures is somewhat misleading- ... morewhile the weights actually serve a much wider, more useful purpose; they were used to gauge the weight of daily items of commerce found in the Burmese market-place. Description: The Hintha Bird Duck: Boldly modelled in the shape of a small groud pecking fowl.
