With ankles crossed, with his hands in Bhumisparsa, with his right hand on his knee and the left on his lap, representing the Buddha calling the earth to witness with a delicate expression on his face through the fine modelling and engraving. The statue is decorated with fine details on his clothing. Antique 19th Century Bronze Burmese Bell Kyeezee Spinning Gong Elephant Howdah
Up for sale is an antique heavy bronze kyeezee or burmese bell. Gong can be suspended from a cord and held in hand while striking the tip with a small wooden mallet. Thus causing it to sound and spin simultaneously. This traditional Burmese instrument features a large elephant with a howdah perched on its back. The relief is duplicated on the reverse. It appears to be cast bronze with an engraved design. I had listed this item previously as an amulet or medallion before having it properly appraised. Despite its intended purpose, it can certainly be worn as an amulet on a leather cord or simply used as a decorative paperweight. It measures approximately 6 by 4 inches. Piece shows some wear with a dark patina. Piece is unmarked and the true age is unknown. I did notice, however, a mark on the reverse side of the bale but I do not know if this ... moreis a hallmark. BUDDHA: Antique Shan Bhumisparsamudra under the Bodhi Tree. Gilt Bronze. 1700's This is a charming statue of the Lord Buddha. Cast in bronze by the lost wax process and gilded, from the Shan State of Burma. This Buddha was taken out of that country before the interdiction of exports of antiquities was imposed in the'90's. I believe this figure dates to the early 1700's; it could be earlier. I also believe that the gilding has been renewed at some time. The Shan State is located in the northeast of the country. It covers 155.800 km, almost a quarter of the total area of that country. The state gets its name from the Shan people, the largest of several ethnic groups that inhabit the hills and plateaus of the largely rural area. Our Buddha is portrayed meditating in the seated position of Padmasana, or the adamantine or full ... morelotus position. Which is usually reserved for figures of the Lord Buddha after his enlightenment. His left hand in dhyanamudra. The mudra of meditation, and his right hand in bhumisparsamudra. The mudra of calling the earth to witness his own enlightenment. This position is the most frequently depicted in Southeast Asian art as it is the moment when Prince Siddhartha becomes the Buddha, literally, The Awakened One" He sits on a simple tapered throne and the odd device springing from behind his head is meant to represent the Bodhi Tree. This figure is 3 5/8 inches tall and 1 inch wide at the bottom of the throne. The bottom of the figure is open. And the tempered core of sand and clay is substantially intact. Has the old Burmese stamp of a man which dates it somewhere between 1886- 1912. Measures: Gong- 13.25" sq x 1.75" deep Stand measures: 24.5 x 40 when put together. The wood frame as you can see below was broken off at one time and they tried to fix it by placing a screw in there.
