Description: A beautiful 19th century Mandalay Nat Spirit. Worshipped by the people of Myanmar before Buddhism became popular. Carved of auspicious'Pyung' wood or Lucky wood, the figure is depicted as a supernatural Spirit, standing on a small rectangular plinth, with the right hand raised, offering protection in warding off evil. xxxxx The Nat is dressed in a long regal style garment. Decorated with floral plates, an elaborate collar, draped central panel, and bell-shape at the bottom hem. The head is covered by a Burmese style headdress, cylindrical-shaped with graduated layers rising to what-would-have-been an ornament finial. xxx The hand-painted features of her face appear realistic and vivid. Portraying a benevolent nature, with almond-shaped eyes, long elegant nose, bow-shaped mouth with pink lips, and arching eyebrows outlined in black. In Burmese culture there are many forms of Nats. Angels or local native deities worshipped. Some of these spirits have benevolent nature, while others have been seen to represent more adverse phenomena. Among the key 37 Nats, this figure is that of a benevolent spirit, showcases a natural smiling expression, that shows us the Nats happy nature- Oh joyful Guardian Spirit. May you show us with your blessings, the blessings of Nature and the Divine. Remarks: Excellent condition. Preserved by re-applied layers of lacquer paint from time to time, with the wood having normal chips, dents, and minor paint loss, due to the many years of exposure to the weather and other deteriorating conditions. I have two wonderful authentic antique Nats for sale this week. This sale is for the one pictured only. I bought these two in Burma in the early 90’s ... moreback when Burma saw fewer than 40.000 foreign visitors per year. At that time true antiques were easy to find but today it’s nearly impossible and sadly most are fakes. These two Nats are very weathered and this one is a little more rough- the paint on the left side of his face is nearly gone from age and environment and his hair has fallen from the bun/wrap. The paint is chipped in a few places so take a good look at the photos. I suspect they both sat under a Bo tree outdoors for many years but they are still wonderful to look at and are full of character. He measures 13 inches tall from the bottom of his wood base to the top of his head. Please contact me if you have any questions. This week I am listing several antiques acquired over my years of travel here in Asia so see my other items. I ship via Registered First Class International mail which usually takes 10-15 working days. I am happy to combine shipping. About Nats: Prior to the advent of Buddhism. Burmese were animists who worshipped a series of nature spirits called Nats. These spirits became converted to Buddhism and thus became helpers of the monks. This was a deliberate policy on the part of King Anawratha and the rulers of Burma in the 11th century. At the same time, these spirits often have their own ceremonies and festivals and are worshipped in addition to the Buddha. There are 37 officially recognized Nats, each with its own history and image. The Nats, as spirits of natural forces, such as water, wind, stones and trees, take many guises. The Nats are all ghosts or spirits of heroes except for one, the chief Nat, Thagyamin Nat(the Indian god Indra, protector of royalty) who was elevated to this position in the 11th century by the great unifier, King Anawratha, who integrated Nat worship into Buddhism. Thus the Nats became the guardians of the state and royal family and guarantors of dynastic c
