Vintage~Antique Burmese Teak Wood/Wooden Marionette/Puppet Lot of 2! With Stands
These guys are awesome! We bought them because we thought they were great. But we just have too much stuff! We didn't really know a lot about them, but the stands they were on still have partial tags(they must have been for sale in an antique store or vintage consignment or something) On the pieces of the tags that are left you can see where it had the words"Teak, Burmese, and"Marionette/Puppet" at one time- this is how we found out a few things about them. We know they are old, the darker guy looks older, and you can see in the pics where he has wear to his face and he has some wear to his clothing. The marionette in the brighter red is a little over 14" inches tall and the marionette with the pointy hat is a little over 16" inches tall. Any questions. Please ask before bidding/buying. All sales are final! We ... morewill package these carefully and we will be using insurance when we ship. Seller Terms: 1. We are not a store. A puppet is made up of 17 to 19 pieces: the head and neck piece, the body in 2 pieces, a pair of arms in 6 pieces and a pair of legs in 8 pieces. They are joined together by means of strings. The height of a puppet is determined by its head, and the head circumference by a hand-span(a measure between thumb and tip of the middle finger, which is roughly equivalent to 9 inches) The formula is: a hand span plus 4 fingers' breadth is the circumference of the head; the head length from top to chin is the standard unit; seven and a half times of this is the height of the puppet from top to toe; and half of the height is the arm length from the shoulder to the ... moretip of the middle finger I MARIONETTES FROM MYANMAR AND THEIR STORY In ancient times marionettes in Myanmar were more than the entertaining stringed puppets they are today. They were a form of medium to tell country folk in far-flung villages the happenings in the Capital. They were allowed safely to divulge bad news to the king when a live messenger would probably have had his head chopped off! And the king himself could reprimand members of his family in a much less direct manner so nobody would lose face. Marionettes first made their appearance on the cultural scene in the 15th century according to written records and reached the peak of their popularity and power during the 18th century. The king patronised his own troupe. As did the queen, princes and other nobility. Other troupes would roam the country playing at Pagoda festivals, which are the country fairs of Myanmar: these troupes would include in their performances scenarios of what was going on in court circles, including royal scandals, much to the enjoyment of the villagers. People with grievances to report to the king were more likely to succeed with the help of the master of the Grand Royal Troupe by asking him to

Antique Teak Wood Burmese Nat Doll 19C Amulet 2
Antique Teak Wood Burmese Nat Doll 19C Amulet The nats are spirits worshipped in Burma(or Myanmar) in conjunction with Buddhism. They are divided between the 37 Great Nats and all the rest(i.e. Spirits of trees, water, etc. Almost all of the 37 Great Nats were human beings who met violent deaths( lit. green death" They may thus also be called nat sein(lit. green spirits) The word'sein' while meaning'green' is being used to mean'raw' in this context. There are however two types of nats in Burmese Buddhist belief. Nat spirits are termed lower nats or auk nats whether named or unnamed. Whereas ahtet nats or higher nat dewas inhabit the six heavens. Much like sainthood, nats can be designated for a variety of reasons, including those only known in certain regions in Burma. Nat worship is less common in urban areas ... morethan in rural areas, and is practised among ethnic minorities as well as in the mainstream Bamar society. It is however among the Buddhist Bamar that the most highly developed form of ceremony and ritual is seen. Every Burmese village has a nat sin which essentially serves as a shrine to the village guardian nat called the ywa saung nat. An offertory coconut is often hung on the main southeast post in the house. Wearing a gaung baung(headdress) and surrounded by perfume, as an offering to the Min Mahagiri(Lord of the Great Mountain) also known as the ein dwin or ein saung(house guardian) nat. One may inherit a certain member or in some instances two of the 37 Nats as mi hsaing hpa hsaing lit. mother's side, father's side) from one or both parents' side to worship depending on where their families originally come from. One also has a personal guardian spirit called ko saung nat Some disagreement in fact exists in academic circles as to whether Burmese Buddhism and Burmese spirit worship are two separate entities or just different dimensions of a single entity. Many Burmese themselves would say it is merely superstition and tend to downplay its role in society. Since t
Antique Burmese Sutra in Solid Teak-wood Frame
Antique Burmese Sutra in Solid Teak-wood Frame I'm exceptionally pleased to add another genuine fine and rare Burmese antique to my auction this week. This is a rare and absolutely beautiful antique Burmese Sutra. In the West we often here the word Sutra in many contexts. However the actual meaning is as follows: That which is of few words. Unequivocal, expresses a vast idea in a gist form, is non-repetitive and doesn’t contain any fault is known as a Sutra. In other words in terms that most of us can more clearly understand. A Sutra is an aphoristic or cryptic statement that expresses a very broad statement in a few words. The practical application of this is that in many Burmese homes or businesses, Sutra's hang on the walls to protect the inhabitants from a variety of things. Soldiers even often carried folded Sutra's into ... morebattle to protect them from the dangers of the enemy. This is a genuine and very old Sutra that is inscribed in Sanskrit on a fine piece of what appears to be old raw silk. It features a variety of symbols and characters that typically have great personal meaning to the person who owns it. Outside of the U.S. antiques from Burma(now known as Myanmar) are extremely coveted by antique dealers and collectors alike. For some reason people here have not been as exposed to the mysticism and beauty that is Burmese art. In other parts of the world it's well known that Burmese artisans are among the finest in the world. It is now illegal to remove antiques from Burma, which makes them all the more desirable and highly collectible. This fine Sutra is mounted in a magnificent solid antique teak-wood frame. This is important because the antique teak-wood(aged over 100 years will not crack due to temperature changes in the U.S. and will retain its beauty and composition. The Sutra in frame measures approximately 19.5" 50cm) x 19.5" 50cm) and.5" 1.3cm) thick, with the Sutra itself approximately 16" 40cm) x 15.5" 39cm) This is an absolutely amazing relic that is a r

Vintage Carved Wood Figure Burmese Burma Dancer with Fan, possibly teak
Coming from an estate auction that included a lot of very nice Asian antiques. The only thing I actually know about her is she has a sticker on the bottom that has written on it: Burma. It may be from the prior owner, but the costuming looks correct to me for that, so I'm assuming it is correct. She looks in very good condition. With a soft patina? to the wood, I think it is teak, but not positive. The wood looks as it may have been burnt some prior to being carved, there is a black burnt area on a bottom corner and a bit showing near her waist. The only flaw, if it is one, is that the tip of her hair may have been broken off, but if so it was done quite a while back, but it may have been carved this way. 10 1/4" tall. Her base is 3 3/4" by a tad over 2" Searching estate sales. Auctions and yard sales to find you(and me) ... morefun stuff. Please read the description and look at the photos closely. They are of the actual items being auctioned. If you have questions please ask before you bid.
