Vintage Burmese Green & Black Lacquer Box for Food Offering at Temple

The box is 9 1/2 inches high and approximately 10 1/2 inches in diameter. All of the antique lacquer pieces tell a story or legend. The base has several panels with three warriors relaxing in an idyllic setting but in one panel the warrior has gone for water(slung over his shoulder on a wooden stick) as he returns he meets a(very friendly! tiger and a foo dog dragon. Everyone seems very calm about the encounter. The lid has a sage sitting on a platform under a tree giving a lecture to three disciples. The exterior of this first layer is in good shape(some splitting of the bamboo) The rich colors are green. Gold and black and the design is well executed. ... moreIt displays beautifully on a table or stand. There are some splits in the lacquer on the top. When the first lid. Which is large 7 1/2 inches high) is removed, a shallow red tray is revealed which was meant to hold one of the food offerings. The interior of this inset is vermillion red and the outside is simply decorated. The bottom of the inset repeats the design. The colors of the inset are vermillion. Green, gold and black. The bottom of the inset tray is in very good shape but the side is damaged. The design on the bottom of the primary container repeats the design on the bottom of the inset tray and is very good shape. This is a reasonably well preserved antique that is very representation of Shan artistry. Please feel free to ask for more pictures with respect to condition before purchasing. Local pick up in Brooklyn Heights NY is welcome. I visited Myanmar(previously Burma) in 2002 and purchased many lacquer pieces on that trip. Unfortunately. Burmese Small Tan Lacquer Box for Food Offering at Temple
This small. Elegant lacquer Temple Box is very unusual. First the colors, gold or tan and green, are not typical of Burmese lacquer. Second, the design is very geometric with a repousse swag design on the lid and the base. The top, sides and bottom have the same geometric design which is well executed but not typical of Burmese lacquer. I think the box was designed to conform to English tastes. I visited Myanmar(previously Burma) in 2002 and purchased this piece from an antique dealer in Yangon on that trip. The box is 4 7/8 inches high and approximately 4 3/8 inches in diameter and displays beautifully on a table or stand. The box has four removable food compartments(please see pictures) and the inside of the box is a medium green color. Condition: It is in the same condition that it was in when I purchased the piece. When the lid is removed ... morethere is some damage to the lacquer on the edge of the second box(please see pictures) There are also some tiny dings on the bottom edge of the top which are not noticeable unless you look for them. Antique Burmese lacquer offering plate,size 7" wide
Antique Burmese lacquer offering plate Offerings of food were taken to a Buddhist monastery or temple. A offering bowl. Called an"ok-kwet. meaning"wide bowl" in Burmese, it is one of several designs of"hsun-ok, the vessels used by families in Burma to transport and display their offerings. This ok-kwet was formed with thin tightly woven bamboo strips, then lacquered inside and out, beginning with natural black lacquer and finishing with lacquer to which cinnabar was added.The pattern of the weaving was allowed to show through the lacquer on this piece. It is sized wide 7 inches by 5.6 inches high. The item will be shipped by Thailand Post which its may take 3-4 weeks to the buyer.
