With ankles crossed, with his hands in Bhumisparsa, with his right hand on his knee and the left on his lap, representing the Buddha calling the earth to witness with a delicate expression on his face through the fine modelling and engraving. Antique 19th Century Bronze Burmese Bell Kyeezee Spinning Gong Elephant Howdah
Up for sale is an antique heavy bronze kyeezee or burmese bell. Gong can be suspended from a cord and held in hand while striking the tip with a small wooden mallet. Thus causing it to sound and spin simultaneously. This traditional Burmese instrument features a large elephant with a howdah perched on its back. The relief is duplicated on the reverse. It appears to be cast bronze with an engraved design. I had listed this item previously as an amulet or medallion before having it properly appraised. Despite its intended purpose, it can certainly be worn as an amulet on a leather cord or simply used as a decorative paperweight. It measures approximately 6 by 4 inches. Piece shows some wear with a dark patina. Piece is unmarked and the true age is unknown. I did notice, however, a mark on the reverse side of the bale but I do not know if this ... moreis a hallmark. The 2 bird figures can be readily seen, but the round cartouche which contains the typical snake symbol can barely be seen, and only portions of the more rectangular cartouche of script can be see. Many of the fractional weights from sets have been lost in time and collectors know these small weights can be hard to find. This example is typical of the form Toe Beast group 4 period Ia in Gear's system. Gear notes this is from the Anaukperlum reign of 1595-1626. It is characterized by Mollat as a Toe 2. The beast is crouching. Tail dropping. The mouth is open with no appendage. The base is octagonal, with a 3 tiered design on the flat truncated cone shape. The beast has four horns.
