They were designed by Helen Miles, an artist extrodinaire at the Wedgewood factories. It is quite rare to find the polychrome painted tiles. In around 1900 the same patterns began appearing on plates and other flatware, with various old and new borders All tiles are marked JOSIAH WEDGWOOD& SONS ... moreETRURIA on the back. The only time Wedgwood used the back marking phrase, JOSIAH WEDGWOOD& SONS ETRURIA was on their tiles. The winter tile also has‘ENGLISH’ on the back. I believe these 4 tiles were collected to represent the seasons. From the 19th Century, wonderful colors, these tiles are very hard to photograph due to high relief, if you need additional pictures please let me know, condition is good with only some minor damage to the high relief edges. Excellent ANTIQUE 19th Century MINTONS Tile ART NOUVEAU 6"x6" No 2861
Excellent ANTIQUE 19th Century MINTONS Tile ART NOUVEAU 6"x6" No 2861 This auction is for an excellent antique tiles from Minton dating to the late 19th Century. The tile has a superb organic. Art Nouveau design in shades of ginger, tan and fawn on a warm buttermilk ground with a good rich glaze. The pattern number is 2861 and registration number is 313518 dating the design to 1898. This is in the era of Leon Solon and the tile is likely to be one of his designs. The tile measures 6 inches(15.25 cm) square. The tile is in excellent used condition with no chips or cracks with a good clean back. There is some expected glaze crazing consistent with age. It is embossed on the back for'Mintons China Works. Stoke on Trent Made in England' with the pattern and registrations numbers.

Stunning ANTIQUE 19th Century MINTONS Tile PERSIAN STYLE 6"x6" Art Nouveau This auction is for a beautiful antique tile from Minton dating to the late 19th Century. The tile has wonderful enamelling in turquoise. Cobalt and grape in typical Persian style. The tile measures 6 inches(15.25 cm) square. The tile is in very good antique condition with slight edge and corner nibbling but no significant issues and with no cement residue to the back. There is expected glaze crazing consistent with age. Using T and R Boote blanks- thanks to Chris Blanchett for this information- this six inch tile is in a pretty good state of preservation. Depicting Mrs Corney and Mr Bumble, one of a series from Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. A small chip to the bottom left corner, a tiny one to the upper left corner and some miniscule edge flea-bites are the only damage. The white flash in the background to the subjects has something to do with the manufacturing process as it Is under the glaze. The glaze is first class, even the back has been glazed. A similar tile(though with fancier decoration) is illustrated on p130 of the Lockett book on tiles.
