Italian Hand Painted Tile Wall Mural Rome Temple of Vesta 4 ft x 2 ft
Offered for sale is a beautiful 18 tile mural hand painted and Made in Italy. It measures 4 ft x 2 ft. I bought it 20 years ago when we were building our Italian style home and traveling in Italy for Italian majolica for architectural features. This one did not find a spot and I finally realized that I need to part with the beauty! This mural depicts the Temple of Vesta in the Forum in Rome. It is signed by the artist on the right bottom corner-Tan Correale Italy. The back of each of the almost 7 7/8" tiles is marked DASS Made in Italy. Each tile is numbered on the back for brainless assembly. I searched eBay and the internet for similar murals-hard to find. The tile mural shopper needs to realize the difference in a hand painted tile and a printed tile-big difference-similar to the difference between an oil painting and a print. This beautiful tile is one of a pair; both are listed for sale this week. It is a standard 6" tile and is just over 1 cm thick. This one is simply marked'England' but it is tube lined. Marked'England' and has registration numbers- it is a good quality tile; often in sets of tiles the maker would only be marked on a couple. 2 Vintage Japanese Ceramic Tiles From Fujimiyaki Tile Works (FM)
These are 2 beautifully hand painted ceramic tiles from the Fujimiyaki Tile Works(FM) in Japan. Based on my research they were produced sometime after 1921. There are Japanese characters in the lower left corner of both tiles which measure 6"x 6" The tiles are 3/16" thick. The art work is primarily floral. On the back of the two tiles are: a serial number. The FM logo, and the words" MADE IN JAPAN" These 3 things are much clearer on the tile with the column( They are sold in used condition. Such panels are rarely found. Almost invariably fixed to walls and difficult to salvage especially when there is pressure for the refurbishment or demolition works to proceed at full speed. Art nouveau designs spreading across two tiles are uncommon(6 x 12 are very rare) there are however a good number of variable height panels designed primarily for dados and fireplace slabs. Often the intervening tiles are repeated and somewhat nonedescript even as simple as a ... moreplain stem( see this clipping from an original catalogue(at the bottom of the page) in which case the top and bottom tiles as a panel can make appealing and elaborate display items for collectors. These appear to have have been a special order or limited edition. The pattern number is from a range apparently reserved for such tiles for it is rarely seen and only on unusual tiles notably tube line panels and fireplace interiors. Removed from a prestigious property in Rio de Janeiro. Near perfect condition. Only minute marks, versos are spotless and typical Richards' diagonal bars from around 1905- 7. The design doesn't align precisely(in the manner of William de Morgan panels! as they were part of a frieze and all were not successfully removed still they carry the freshness of the design and the brilliance of colours. In the image they are aligned precisely according to the edge but when framed the top tile can be moved a little to the right and then the alignment is very good. Antique Copeland Arts & Crafts Pottery Tile Panel Signed Pre-Raphaelite 1728 #2
This is a stunning and very large hand painted panel tile depicting a young Pre-Raphaelite man with moustache. This piece is seriously well painted with bright colours. It is signed by the artist to the front LTJ and dated 1882. I do not know who the artist is but it is painted by a skilled hand. It is unmarked to the reverse. But as we have a similar tile listed, by the same hand, we assume it to be a Copeland example. It is in excellent condition. There are a few tiny glaze frits to the edge as seen in the images, a chip to the corner and a shallow slither chip to the other corner. It measures 41cm/ 16" tall and 20cm/ 8" wide. Antique Art Nouveau Arts & Crafts 2 tile panel #1067-1068 Peacock feather MINT!
A panel of two original(antique) Art Nouveau press-moulded majolica tiles. Each measuring 6" x 6" Probably part of a wall scheme of repeating motifs, of which this is one. The vibrant peacock-blue and burnt-orange stylized feather reminds me of an Egyptian papyrus fan. The central leaves are a light apple-green colour, whilst the stems and outline are a light mint green. The ivory background- which looks slightly more yellowy here and there due to the pooling of glaze and the natural variation from tile to tile- is ridged and has raised scrolling tendril-like motifs. Mint condition with no faults that I can see. Three of the corners have the very slightest of grazing from fitting into furniture at the time of manufacture. There is faint crackle-crazing due to age. Please see the detailed images(taken with a camera and not my usual ... morehigh-resolution direct scans because the tiles are currently mounted onto thin hardboard with PVA glue. This is how I mount my panels before I frame them, to prevent loose tiles from slipping out and falling. The PVA is a non-permanent fix and will easily remove from the tiles. I can do this before posting if the winning bidder would like me to. In the meantime, it isn't possible to photograph the tile backs! This tile panel is from my own collection. Easily postable. The finished parcel will qualify for the Royal Mail's'up to 2kg' rates and a'small parcel' rather than a'medium parcel' if the tiles are removed from the hardboard and packed as a cube(as per the quotes below, saving around £2.50 in postage) The tiles will be properly bubblewrapped, padded and strongly boxed. 2" Antique MINTON HOLLINS& CO Fireplace Relief Tile 1860-1890 Victorian Moulded This is a lovely little tile from Minton. Hollins& Co. Circa 1860s-1890s. It is a brown/taupe relief tile from a fireplace. It features a pretty pinecone-like design. This tile bears an impressed circular insignia on reverse: MINTON, HOLLINS& Co. Inside of the circle is the number 2I2 with EB beneath. There is a P outside the circle on the right bottom corner and a X sign in the lower left corner. In 1845. Herbert Minton took Michael Daintry Hollins into partnership. And the tile-making side of the business became known as Minton Hollins& Co. Herbert Minton's successful experiments in making encaustic tiles during the 1840s( Encaustic tiles are ceramic tiles with a decoration made of different colours of clay inlaid into the surface. A ... moremethod originally produced in the middle ages) this had put him at the forefront of a huge industry supplying the requirments of institutions, churches, and domestic interiors all over the world.
