Genuine Art Nouveau decorative tile. 'Boote' 1 of a pair. Majolica. Iridescence.
This beautiful tile is one of a pair; both are listed for sale this week. It is a standard 6" tile and is just over 1 cm thick. This one is simply marked'England' but the second of the pair has the stamped greyhound motif of'Boote' The green glaze is thicker in the lower areas due to pooling and there is also surface iridescence that adds to the decorative appeal. Majolica Art Nouveau Tile(pc.1) This tile is from my own house which dates c.1901. We found a number of tiles on two fireplace hearths when replacing our carpets. This tile is in reasonable condition but has some blemishes(not sure of the correct terminology here) as can be seen from the photos. There may be some small remnants of cement on the face of the tile. And cement on the edges and back, but I'm sure this could be removed easily with care(please study photo carefully) I am well aware from my research that there is a large fraternity of tile collectors out there who know more about tiles than I will forget, so I am not pretending to be any expert. I am aware of the terms'moulded' and'tube lined' and have read a number of conflicting views on what these are. I think this tile is a moulded tile, but I will leave that ... moredecision to the experts. The tile is 6"x6" and 3/8" thick. From the photo'COV' and'ENGLAND' can be seen on the back of the tile. Could this stand for Coventry, England? I have cleaned the tile a little, but haven't spent too much time on this as I don't want to ruin anything. I believe I have packaged the tile well(see my feedback) as I want it to arrive in the same condition it was sent! If you have any questions I will do my best to answer as quickly as possible, but please spare the jargon- I am no collector! These are museum worthy tiles. Few collectors will have the pleasure of such rarities which once framed will present a unique and intriguing display. Block printed on to a Morocco Patent surface in two greens and black in a gothic style with fire-breathing dragons at the base. A profile of Vulcan in the central diamond-shaped cartouche and a flaming torch beneath an ... morearchitectural spandrel at the top. Morocco is described thus in the Mintons catalogue. The above are patterns of the New Patent"MOROCCO' Tiles may be done in all tints of Colour. The surface being Granulated and Semi-Vitreous the mat or deadened effect is suitable for those purposes where Glazed Tiles are objectionable" Such Morocco tiles are very rare individually and more so as a full panel. They were not produced for very long by Mintons standards. They appear on Sheet 1 of the 1883 Mintons catalogue and were the first range of patterns to be excised from the catalogue. The British Museum has a similar panel in a different colourway. There is some damage and restoration from the original installation. They were a very tight fit in a cast iron fireplace and the edges were nibbled in places to circumvent the fixing bolts, fireplaces for eight inch tiles were more prone to damage especially in fireplaces where the tiles were without a barrier affording some protection from the rising damp beneath. This tile is made by T& R Boote and dates to 1905. It is a standard 6 inch tiles. It is tube lined and it is difficult to see but the ground is a deep bottle green with surface iridescence. The condition is very good there are a few nibbles to the corners as can be seen in the photograph but basically it is excellent. This is a Lot of Antique Vintage Salvaged White Matte 3" x 3/8" thick Hexagon floor Tile. It can be an entire small bathroom floor. 6'X10' if you have a 5' shower. Installed in house around 1901 in the Kansas City Area. There are over 1015 field pieces plus halves. Thirds, and broken pieces for edging. 18 pieces per square foot. Total square feet is around 57 of good field tile and 35 plus feet of edging tiles. Original Bathroom was 12x17 feet. Majority of tiles were removed in good shape. These are salvaged tiles. Some will have flea bites on edges and some will have thin mortar on edges. Original spacing was 1/16th inch. Edges should be cleaned prior to installation. These are flat tiles.
