This magnificent tile was made by Maw and Co. Benthall Works, Broseley,Shropshire around 1875. It is part of a series of 6 tiles based on scenes from the poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow `The hanging of the Crane` which was written in 1874.The tile is moulded in very high relief and has a rich majolica glaze. It is 6 inches square and has the Maws factory marks on the back.This tile is 0.5 inches thick and is much heavier than usual.

This is a lovely relief moulded tile. It has a central stylized rose surrounded by a ruched border. It is 6 inches square and in good condition with good rich majolica glazes. The back has no makers mark. It has 6 embossed ribs.

Another antique item brought home by Afghanistan vet. See below. Hard to figure out origin. This is a very primitive pottery tile. Antiquity or antique. Hand-painted and lead glazed in clear. Greens, browns, yellow and soft golden orange. Possibly Persian, Qajar Iznik Approx. 7-5/8" high. A little over 4-7/8" wide. The thickness varies because it was formed in bas relief, with the bowl or hat at his feet, his bent knees, right shoulder, and right side of his head are higher or thicker than the rest, like 3-D modeling. No cracks. Some crazing, see pics. There are several small spots where the glazing missed, maybe one spot where it has come off. There is an edge chip on the top right that starts on the front and runs over the side, and kind of continues on the back a bit. The left bottom corner has a small chip as well. This awesome piece came from the estate of a world traveler. And collector of high quality items. This is a rare antique Qajar molded and glazed Iranian tile, in relief. This is by far, the prettiest one I have seen. Young boy on horseback, with his falcon on his arm, and his dog by his side. Stamped on back, and in a speciality made frame, made to accomodate the relief pattern in this tile. Condition very good with something as old as this is. Crack that is not noticeable under horses hind leg, but that is the one one I see, and that is remarkable considering the age of this item. Measures approx. 8.5" by 11" framed. SUPERB WEDGWOOD `SCROLLS` TILE -MAJOLICA GLAZE MOULDED IN VERY HIGH RELIEF
This unusual tile was made by the Wedgood factory. Etruria, Stoke on Trent around 1900.It is slip moulded in very high relief with a pattern of scrolls and stylized Fleur de Lys. There is a large central circular boss. The tile is coloured with rich majolica glaze in shades of rich browns some parts are slightly irridized. The tile is 6 inches square and the central boss stands 1 inch tall.The back has impressed Wedgwood and TXO(see picture#2) The tile is in excellent condition.

I'm not sure of the manufacturer- it has a grip pattern reminiscent of Corn Bros. However, with the embossed"S" I'm not sure this is correct. This unusual tile was made by Gibbons Hinton. Brierley Hill, Stourbridge around 1900. It is moulded in low relief and intaglio with a picture of a sailing boat on a narrow lake or fiord. The tile was possibly designed by Owen Gibbons and is their patent `Chromo-Relievo` dust pressed tile. The picture is coloured with rich majolica glazes. It is 6 inches square and in good condition. It is a brown/taupe relief tile from a fireplace. It features a pretty pinecone-like design. This tile bears an impressed circular insignia on reverse: MINTON, HOLLINS& Co. Inside of the circle is the number 2I2 with EB beneath. There is a P outside the circle on the right bottom corner and a X sign in the lower left corner. In 1845. Herbert Minton took Michael Daintry Hollins into partnership. And the tile-making side of the business became known as Minton Hollins& Co. The panel is impressed with a country image of a thatched cottage with wooden fence. As can be seen in the photos. The turquoise has flared to the bottom left of the tile during firing. The sides of the tile and edge of the back are also glazed dark blue. The back has impressed grip design, with"Patent" and what could be a blue glazed mark, but no obvious makers name. Quite a heavy tile weighing just over 590 grams. Condition/ Defects: The tile is in good condition; crazing all over in the turquoise ... moreglaze and loss of glaze to the high points. Fine surface scratches and matt rub marks(absence of gloss) in the dark blue glaze. Which also has a couple of surface chips. Please supersize the photos to see better.
