Antique 17th century VIANNA DO CASTELLO Portuguese Tile! Marked & Dated, 1794!
RARE 18th Century Portuguese Vianna Do Castello Azulejo Tile! Makers Mark. Artist Signed, Dated- 1794! What a lovely item this is. It is a Portuguese. Handpainted glazed tile featuring a lovely Young Portuguese Lady Dancing! Her hands are moving, and skirt is twirling. It looks as if she will dance off of the tile. She is wearing typical dance attire for the late 18th century, and has on a netted head cover, also typical of the late 1700's. She has on a lovely yellow dress with triangle decorations applied to skirted area. The jacket is a purple Bolero style jacket with gray appliques on the shoulders. Her face is quite peaceful and she is smiling. The tile does have some condition problems from being out in the weather while displayed for others to enjoy. There is pitting and crazing on face of tile. The edge on the left side of the ... moretile has three chips that I am not sure were made prior to painting or after. The tile back has the edges chipped off from being removed from the wall, but this is to be expected when a tile is removed. These are as collectible as tiles not displayed. This one, however, has such personality. as though it has worked for a long time but now will enjoy a retirement. If you take a piece of paper and cover the sides of the tile one at a time, and, then do a rubbing, you can see the marks(maker and I believe artist) as well as the date and some other information I could not translate. There are also marks when you make a rubbing the same way on the back of the tile, as well as marks on the back you can see when you tilt the tile on an angle. as long as your vision is good. Luckily, this tile was removed before it fell apart like the male counterpart of this dancing team. In Viana Do Castelo where this was purchased in the 1940's, the local people add and remove the tiles as they get worn or need to be changed out in many of their public buildings. The ship is historically accurate as far as its unique shape, the location of the three mast, sails, shrouds(nets the crew crawls up to tend to sales and flags) and gun ports. The artist even put a Jibboom on the front! The colors are beautiful. These are typical for the late 1700's, earkt 1800's. This FAIENCE tile was made, painted with enamel base paint, glazed, and then fired giving it a clear shiny, very protective sheen. Enamel Faience finish is protecting this antique painting and giving the heavy tile overall durability. There are two chips(not ... moresure if the were made prior to painting or after but they are not noticeable when you look at the tile as a whole) on base of tile(see photos) and there are"pox marks" where bubbles popped on the three thin, blue flags atop the mast, and in two places in the ocean these marks actually look as though they were made on purpose to me. If you take a piece of paper and cover the sides of the tile one at a time, and, then do a rubbing, you can see the marks(maker and I believe artist) as well as the date(which is difficult to make out, but after rubbing again, I believe it says 1794. The manufacturer mark was used from 1774-1812. and some other information I could not translate. There are also marks when you make a rubbing the same way on the back of the tile, as well as marks you can make out if you have great vision. which I do not. Luckily, this tile was never put up for others to enjoy. In Viana Do Castelo, where this was purchased in the 1940's, the local people put up and remove the tiles as they get worn or need to be changed out. This is the first of three antique Minton tiles I am selling. They have different designs. But are similar colours and period. The tile measures 6" x 6" It shows a lady in a classical pose in the centre. With swags on either side and on the bottom. I'm not very good on periods; maybe a bit Regency or Greek Revival?
