Antique art TILE bas relief Persian Qajar Iznik Russian Afghanistan Italy German
Another antique item brought home by Afghanistan vet. See below. Hard to figure out origin. This is a very primitive pottery tile. Antiquity or antique. Hand-painted and lead glazed in clear. Greens, browns, yellow and soft golden orange. Possibly Persian, Qajar Iznik Approx. 7-5/8" high. A little over 4-7/8" wide. The thickness varies because it was formed in bas relief, with the bowl or hat at his feet, his bent knees, right shoulder, and right side of his head are higher or thicker than the rest, like 3-D modeling. No cracks. Some crazing, see pics. There are several small spots where the glazing missed, maybe one spot where it has come off. There is an edge chip on the top right that starts on the front and runs over the side, and kind of continues on the back a bit. The left bottom corner has a small chip as well. Pre70 Tile city WIL & Pancratius Patron St of Children German Wessel
This company was in business for 140 yrs before shutting down in 1969. This tile must be older than 43 yrs but I cannot date it for certain unless it's pattern is found. I collect antique and interesting porcelain tiles not that I am an authority on any of them or their manufacture. This is one from my collection and my mother in law who is German helped me with the translation. Besides being beautiful. Some tiles are antique, all are works of art. They have multiple uses, they make nice framed art displayed on a plate easel on a table or hung on a wall like a picture. You can use them as inserts in furniture especially jewelry box tops. I also used one as a focal point in my new kitchen backsplash. I trimmed around it for added effect with some store bought 1x1 colorful"cherry sucker" glass tiles and worked that into the 3x6 ... moretravertine blocks that made up the majority of the back splash. Unusual. Unique and beautiful. This is a German Tile made by Wessel. Antique German Tile Set Pink Flower Framed MOPF Vorm
These antique tiles. Including the frame, measure 11 5/8" x 6" The frame is silver metal, backed by wood, with an opening to show the marks on the back of the tile that identify them as VORM MOPF. The tiles have a wonderful striking appearance. There are some flaws, along the edges of the tile, for example. The chips don't seem so noticeable as the clay underneath the glaze is also white. I didn't even realize they were there for a very long time, but now that I do seem them, I have to mention them. There are also some areas on the bottom tile that have what might be a little kiln debris fired right into the tile. I've added closeups to you can tell what I'm talking about. It has a very unusual glaze colour- a deep greyish-blue-green. Hard to describe, but quite unlike any other tile I have ever had in my collection. It features two highly-stylized, geometric flower or tree forms with rounded pentagonal outlines and scrolls on the stems which continue all along the base of the tile. Excellent original condition. Just a little surface rubbing to the highest points of the two stylized flowers and a few light surface scratches here and there. Very slightly nibbled corners from fitting into furniture at the time of manufacture. Please see the detailed scans. Antique German Tile Fruit Basket and Bows
This gorgeous tile is very textural and you can feel the apples. Potatoes, plum, pear and grapes, as well as the weaving on the basket. It is in excellent condition, If I hold it to the side, I see a few tiny scratches, but nothing you wouldn't expect for a hundred year old tile. It measures just under 6" on each side and it is just short of 1/2" thick. It's a real beauty. There is a hook securely taped on the back. Shipping is according to zip code for priority mail.
