Antique Biblical English Delftware Tile from hand painted in manganese c1720 Description Antique English Delftware Tile from about 1720 and hand painted in manganese. The scene on this tin glazed tile depicts Pontius Pilate washing his hands in the matter of the deposition of Jesus Christ. Jesus is depicted on the right with a symbolic halo aura and is being escorted away by an armed soldier after the crowd selected to free Barabbas. Instead. Condition is good with the tile having crazing, a scrape to the bottom right hand facia and the edges being marked commensurate with being use and age(nearly 300 years! This and others were removed from a wall. 5” square tile. See Photographs This scene is a rendering of events taken from the Gospel according to St. Matthew. Particularly Chapter 27, Passage 24 where Pontius Pilate"took water and ... morewashed his hands" as a symbolic gesture to show that he"was innocent of the blood of this just person" Chaffer01 is pleased to offer this nearly 300 year old rendering which would have been hand painted by a Delft decorator of a very important event in the history of Christianity. The four outer corner motifs are early delicate variants of the oxhead motif and help date this tile to the 1690 to 1750 period.
