Rare Vintage Artist Signed TALAVERA TILE MURAL ~ Old Mission ~ 12 tiles WOW! What a great lot of vintage Mexican hand painted tiles! And they tell a story! These wonderful vintage tiles. 12 in all, are hand painted to display a wonderful old church building, probably in ancient Mexico. They both have crosses on the roofs. These are wonderfully hand painted and are marked on the back with C-L-A-S-A Hecho en Mexico( made in Mexico) and there is a sort of bird figure in the middle of the stamp. Each tile measures 4 1/4 inch X 4 1/2 inch, and the 12 of them fit together like a puzzle. All are in good shape with normal minor wear, and one with a tiny chip on the corner. They do have age crazing that helps attest to their age. A wonderful find. Glue them to a board and frame them, or use to complete a table top. Just a really wonderful set of these ... moretiles. Signed Wheeling Cushion Tile as shown in the photo. The very well done handpainted Tile is artist signed Wirt. The Tile has the face of a person at a door window. Very unusual piece. Well loved and cared for vintage tile. CONDITION: Excellent and free from chips or cracks. There is a tiny pottry flaw on the front of the tile. MEASUREMENT: 6" sq. Nice slipware tile made at Burmantofts or the Leeds Art Pottery signed by artist
This is a rectangular slip painted tile dating from the late Victorian period(1880-1900) It's art pottery made in Leeds. Yorkshire. It was either made at Burmantofts or at Leeds Art Pottery. I can say this not just because the type of decoration is what would be called typical Burmantofts, but also because it is signed with the initials, on the front and inscribed on the back for the'pot painter' Harold Leach. The nice slipware image is named on the back' Near Derwentwater' The tile is 12 inch by 6 inch(30.5 cm by 15 cm) It's in good condition with only one small rim scuff chip and a small flake off of the slip, see images. The tile was found in the Leeds area. Leach worked at Burmantofts before leaving with Roland Charles Brown. Another artist there, to join James Senior who had just set up a small works in Hunslet, ... moreLeeds called the Hunsletesque Pottery in about 1886. The firm was small having two pressers and a pupil, two artists and two girls for doing ground work. In 1890 they moved into the old Leathley Lane Pottery buildings where they traded as the Leeds Art Pottery. The business grew with staff including three slip casters. Four pressers, a modeller, a mould maker, two clay makers, three tile makers, two kiln setters, a tile dipper, a saggar maker, a colour maker, six artists for slip painting, four girls for ground painting, a thrower and a turner with assistants, a majolica dipper, three majolica painters, two warehousemen, two clerks, two yard men and an engine driver. Morton also tells us that one of the best colour makers of the day was working for them, a Mr Tom Till. All this information is from J.T.Morton who joined the firm as an apprentice at 13 years old in around 1886 and who's notes are in the collection of Temple Newsam. Leeds.
