Antique Art Nouveau Edwardian Yellow & Green Majolica Tile - Corn Brothers ?
Up for auction is an Art Nouveau Edwardian Majolica Tile probably made by Corn Brothers. The tile is 6 inches(approx 15 cm) square. It is decorated with a stylised central image in yellow and green depicting stylised flowerheads. Stems and leaves. All on a cream background. The tile has a lovely glossy majolica finish to the surface. Unfortunately as you can see this tile has the top left corner missing. However it would display well with sensitive framing or could perhaps be used in a project where a part tile was required. Apart from the missing corner there is also a bit of minor chipping/ nibbling affecting the left and bottom edges. There are a couple of tiny marks to the surface towards the lower right corner. And a tiny dark mark below the central image towards the left. The surface of the tile has overall crazing commensurate with ... moreage& the odd scratch. There are a few small areas where the colours are outside their designated areas a common manufacturing flaw in tiles of this period and style. Please enlarge photo to see tile in more detail. Simplified naturalistic motifs, geometrical concave convex abstractions and elegant movement were some of its regular characteristics, and although applied distinctly in different areas of Europe it formed a single style. Apart from its beauty, is for this reason these tiles are so attractive. They are part of applied arts history of the early 20th century. These architectural antique pieces can be reinstalled. 5 Antique English Art Nouveau Ceramic Tiles These come from an estate we are honored to be liquidating Note: The pictures make the tiles look a bit yellowed in the lower right corners of the images. That is a function of the indoor lighting. They actual tiles are not yellowed. This lot consists of five Art Nouveau period tiles made in England. They are checkered. With lovely stylized flowers. They measure 6X6 inches. While the overall condition is pretty nice for antique tiles. They do have a few issues worth noting. There are scuffs and scratches scattered about, most noticeable in the plain dark green areas. They have the iridescent sheen that is acquired over time due to cleaning, but that is typical of antique tiles. There are a few small nick around the edges, the worst being on the tile pictured in the upper left. That tile also has ... moresome dark staining on the back. A couple have as-mad imperfections, the most notable being a spot where the glaze did not stick on a small raised bump in the center of the dark green area. Finally, they all have crazing. The last two pictures show the surfaces in bright raking light, to show the minute flaws on the surface. Those flaws are not that obvious to the naked eye under normal lighting situations. Flaws notwithstanding. The design corners are all quite nice. I think these would be great to cut out and use for accent pieces. Overall, a decent, if not perfect lot of genuine antique English Art Nouveau tiles. Offered at a low minimum bid giving consideration to the condition issues. In excellent condition, there is only one fleabite near one of the corners on the edge- otherwise, no cracks, chips or dings to this beautiful colorful tile. Made of red clay. I am selling these tiles as a set because I do not wish to split them up- they look great together and there are enough of them to do something good with. They are by T& R Boote and date to 1905. They are standard 6 inch tiles. They are tube lined and it is difficult to see but the ground is a deep bottle green with surface iridescence. The condition is very good there are a few nibbles to the corners as can be seen in the photograph but basically they are excellent. I have a shop in SHrewsbury where you are welcome to view. A lovely cobalt blue cross is in a burgundy diamond and surrounded by teal green vines. The background is gray, and the cobalt blue is also metallic at the right angle. The tile is in good condition with one chipped corner, with pencil lines on the back. Made of red clay. The tile is 3/8 inches thick and isn't warped. It is unmarked, and has been used. Incorporating heart-shaped leaves and whiplash stems. There is pronounced iridescence to the glaze. Fabulous overall condition. No damage whatsoever. Two tiny spots of clay trapped in the glaze during manufacture near far top right. The slightest of rubbing around the extreme edges and even less to the highest point of the bud design- but you really have to look for it! Faint background crackle-crazing due to age. Antique Art nouveau tile. T & R Boote 1905 Iridescent green. Tube lined. 1 of 5
This tile is made by T& R Boote and dates to 1905. It is a standard 6 inch tiles. It is tube lined and it is difficult to see but the ground is a deep bottle green with surface iridescence. The condition is very good there are a few nibbles to the corners as can be seen in the photograph but basically it is excellent. There are five in the set but this auction is for one tile- the others are for sale if anyone is interested. I have a shop in Shrewsbury where you are welcome to view. One tube lined tile in shades of green- very Art Nouveau style of design. The back is marked 14 in felt tip pen. May be a reproduction tile- I'm no expert. As you can see it has a glaze run fault and a brown dot in the top flower. No crazing or damage. Aproximate size- 6 inches/ 15 cm square. I SHIP WORLDWIDE- PAYPAL ONLY OUTSIDE THE UK PLEASE. Antique English Art Nouveau Secessionist tile green tulips #1051
An original(antique) Art Nouveau press-moulded majolica tile measuring 6" x 6" The angular rich-green stylized tulip motifs on a green-washed cream background have a Secessionist feel. They have beautiful little black dots(presumably representing seeds) The plain quarters are olive green. Great overall condition with just some surface rubbing to the edges of the two plain green quarters. No chips or cracks. The lower right corner was chamfered to fit furniture at the time of manufacture. There is attractive fine background crackle-crazing due to age. Please see the detailed scans. The rear is marked'ENGLAND' and'E' Easily postable. The finished parcel will weigh around 850g-950g for a single tile properly bubblewrapped. Padded and strongly boxed.
