Antique Victorian English Blue & White Floral Printed Tulip Tile Lea & Boulton
Up for auction is a pretty Victorian floral printed tile by Lea& Boulton. This tile is printed with a lovely design featuring tulips and associated foliage surrounded by a scrolled border decorated with part leaves& other designs. The pattern on the tile is printed in a steel blue colour(greyish blue) On an off-white background. The surface of the tile has a nice glossy finish. The tile measures 6 inches square. This tile is in good condition. The four corners have all been neatly shaped probably to fit the tile into its original setting. This has been done professionally probably at the time of manufacture and in any event prior to the tile being decorated. As the glaze continues over the shaped edges. The edges and corners are generally in nice condition. There is a very small shallow chip to the bottom left corner. Very tiny& ... moreshallow chip/ nic to bottom edge near left corner. Tiny bits of grazing to top edge near left corner and left edge about an inch up from bottom corner- but all extremely minimal and restricted to the very outer edges. There is a little blurring/ smudging to the print affecting a tiny area in the top left corner area. And a few specks of blue and other colours in the white areas, as well as a few very tiny indents and raised areas to the surface- all manufacturing flaws common with tiles from this period. The tile has overall crazing which is pale in colour& a little scratching to the surface commensurate with age and use. Please enlarge photos to see tile in more detail. The scene on this tin glazed tile depicts Pontius Pilate washing his hands in the matter of the deposition of Jesus Christ. Jesus is depicted on the right with a symbolic halo aura and is being escorted away by an armed soldier after the crowd selected to free Barabbas. Instead. Condition is good with the tile having crazing, a scrape to the bottom right hand facia and the edges being marked commensurate with being use and age(nearly 300 years! This and others were removed from a wall. 5” square tile. See Photographs This scene is a rendering of events taken from the Gospel according to St. Matthew. Particularly Chapter 27, Passage 24 where Pontius Pilate"took water and ... morewashed his hands" as a symbolic gesture to show that he"was innocent of the blood of this just person" Chaffer01 is pleased to offer this nearly 300 year old rendering which would have been hand painted by a Delft decorator of a very important event in the history of Christianity. The four outer corner motifs are early delicate variants of the oxhead motif and help date this tile to the 1690 to 1750 period. Up for auction is a striking Victorian tile. Made by Sherwin& Cotton. The tile has a bold floral pattern across the whole tile surface in a reddish brown colour on a dark background which has a purple colouration but in sections looks almost black. This darker glaze is inconsistent across the tile appearing more purple in nature towards the tile edges. There is a lustrous quality to the glaze when it catches the light. Set of 4 Antique Encaustic Floor Tiles made in England. Size- Each tile is about 6 inches by 6 inches Square These 4 tiles are in EXCELLENT condition and I have photographed the minor chips in the edges I can see. These tiles DO NOT appear to have ever been set as the backs are clean. This is a set of 4 each matching tiles- made by The Campbell Tile Co. Stoke Upon Trent: The partnership between Colin Minton Campbell and Michael Daintry Hollins ended in 1868. It produced a split in the famous Minton company. With Campbell in charge of china production at Minton's China Works, and Hollins producing tiles of various types at Minton, Hollins& Co. Campbell also started to produce tiles, but it was not until he took over an existing tileworks in 1875 that production of encaustic and mosaic floor tiles began. This business was originally ... morestyled the Minton Brick& Tile Co. though a lawsuit brought by Hollins forced Campbell to drop'Minton' from the name. I think this is one of the prettiest art nouveau tiles ever made. It was made by Rhodes in England in 1902. This design is very well documented and this is a very fine example. The colors speak for themselves and the shine is still beautiful. It measures 6" x 6. There is minimal surface scratching but some chipping on the corners. Presumably when it was cut to fit or taken out of wherever it spent most of its life. This does not detract whatsoever from the beauty of the piece. A rare original(antique) Art Nouveau press-moulded majolica tile measuring 6" x 3" This lustrous and vibrant emerald green tile has three large. Raised, spear-like buds in an unusual khaki colour, with glorious little sky-blue forget-me-not flowers peeping through behind them. Virtually mint condition. When turned to a strong light source, the very slightest of surface rubbing is visible along the extreme upper and lower edges, and even less so to the high central points of two of the buds. Antique English Rhodes Art Nouveau tile c.1908 Beautiful Antique English Rhode Tile Co. tile decorated with a large Art Nouveau flower design. Made circa 1908. The tile measures 6 inches square and has the typical Rhode Tile Co. moulded back. The back is also moulded with the 1908 registration number 533577. The tile’s bottom two corners have been reduced, this was because of the tile being at one time fitted into a washstand splash back. All my tiles are antique or vintage and not modern reproductions. Antique English Art Nouveau 5 colours tile #1064 Rhodes Tile Co.
A fabulous original(antique) Art Nouveau press-moulded majolica tile measuring 6" x 6" It features a lovely graduated primrose yellow-amber waterlily-like flower with a violet centre and beautiful flanking buds. Graduated mint-green to olive-green leaves- including a pair of beautiful little spear-shaped ones at the bottom- against a vibrant green background with an outlined crescent-shaped cartouche. The green glaze is highly iridescent. Fabulous overall condition with no damage. Just the merest hint of corner chamfering(both right-hand corners) at the time of manufacture to fit furniture or a fireplace(the rear is so clean, it looks unused) The raised pattern outline isn't complete everywhere but this is glazed over and it is how this tile was when made- not a later fault or damage. A very special original(antique) high Art Nouveau press-moulded majolica tile measuring 6" x 6" This stunning design in four colours features a full poppy(or tulip? flower in graduated ice-blue to slate-blue. At its centre and revealed between the scrolling petals are detailed amber seeds and stamens. Hanging from the flower are two pendants of tiny amber flowers. The whiplash stems and spear-shaped leaves are in khaki-olive graduating to a brighter green. On a bright green background which is iridescent. This tile is in fabulous, near mint condition. In scrutinizing it for listing on eBay, I can only detect the following: some minor nibbling to the extreme edges and perhaps the lightest of surface rubbing to the highest points of the leaves and one section of associated outlining at the bottom(but you have to look for it! RARE Antique English Art Nouveau tile #1082 4 colours!
A rare and unusual original(antique) Art Nouveau press-moulded majolica tile measuring 6" x 6" This is the only tile I have seen in this design in over 15 years of collecting. It features deep French-blue to navy-blue flowers. Apple green spiralling stems and a ribbon-like band at the top. The main flower sits in a primrose-yellow heart-shaped cartouche surrounded by enfolding apple-green leaves. Very unusual. The background is a duck-egg blue colour. Virtually mint condition. I can find no faults at all. Antique English Art Nouveau blue tulips tile #1071 5 colours! Mintons
A stunning original(antique) Art Nouveau press-moulded majolica tile measuring 6" x 6" Which I have always assumed to have been designed by Lewis F.Day. It features bright teal to light-blue tulip flowers with elegantly sweeping graduated light-olive to olive leaves and stems on a cream background. An extremely unusual feature(and one that I have not seen on any other Art Nouveau tile) is the pinkish-mink coloured curving branches with little, sometimes diamond-shaped clusters of raised dots. At the very base of the tile is a curving golden coloured bar. Excellent original condition. Would be mint but for the rubbing here and there to the raised pattern outline and one small extreme edge chip at top right corner. Unusual Antique English Art Nouveau peacock/emerald tile #1059 Jellyfish?!
An unusual original(antique) Art Nouveau press-moulded majolica tile measuring 6" x 6" I have never seen this design before in over 15 years of collecting Art Nouveau tiles. The soft apple-green flowers. With reddish-brown centres, in white spade-shaped cartouches on light turquoise stems look just like pairs of jellyfish propelling themselves through water(or is it just me? The plain quarters are a glowing peacock-blue/emerald green which I am afraid my new scanner has made to appear rather dull. Great overall condition with just some light rubbing to the high pattern outline and a few surface scratches seen when turned to the light. Antique English Art Nouveau 3 tile panel #1075-1077 Sky blue tulips
A run of three original(antique) Art Nouveau press-moulded majolica tiles. Each measuring 6" x 6" Probably part of a fireplace panel originally consisting of 5 tiles, but I've only ever had three. The only real sign that the original design is truncated is the small amount of sky-blue glaze right at the base of the second tile. Otherwise, the pattern of caramel-coloured leaves with their dimpled light apple-green background continues rather convincingly! The three bright sky-blue tulips are the stars of this panel, set off beautifully against the cream background.Great original condition with just some edge nibbles to tiles 1& 2, a larger top right corner chip to tile 3, 4 little surface chips each to tiles 2& 3. No cracks or other problems. There is faint crackle-crazing due to age. This is how I mount my panels before I frame them, to prevent loose tiles from slipping out and falling. The PVA is a non-permanent fix and will easily remove from the tiles. I can do this before posting if the winning bidder would like me to. In the meantime, it isn't possible to photograph the tile backs! This tile panel is from my own collection. Easily postable.
