Victorian art tile made by the Columbia Encaustic Tile Co. of Anderson.Indiana.Marked on the back. This tile measures 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" x 1/2" thick. Central flower with botanicals in a mint green and ochre glaze. Columbia tiles do not come up for sale very often and the"encaustic" part of their name may mean that that is what they primarily produced-unglazed encaustic tiles.This tile has a"hole" at the bottom right. It was a very dark spot that I ran underwater and it slowly dissolved and left this mark. No doubt a piece of organic material that made it's way onto the surface of the tileduring production and burned into the tile. A few other chips on the right side as seen in photos as well as a few edge indents that are factory done and glazed over. A scarce tile nonetheless! Rare Antique Iridescent Seljuk Star Tile Central Asia Islamic Ceramic Turkik Art
Anatolia to Central Asia. 11th- 13th Century I.Iridescent Seljuk Star Tile 1.The Sejuks ruled from Central Asia, through Iran, Iraq, Syria south to Mecca& eastern Anatolia, during the eleventh to twelfth centuries. Several dynasties of Turkish origin created unique Islamic art forms now referred to as Seljuk art. Amongst their achievements was production of cobalt blue& luster ware potteries. Characteristic amongst tiles were the“star” shaped tiles, as this in very early example. 1.In order to illustrate certain characteristics of the tile, the images have been“enhanced” with image contrasting tools to highlight the design& iridescence. 1.Characteristic 8-pointed star-shaped tile, utilizing cobalt-blue for the decoration and for the border elements. 1.Another way to show more details is to wet the surface of the tile, thus showing ... moremaking the surface more translucent and revealing more of the colors& the pasterns below the surface. 1.Although not very apparent, the tile is likely decorated with floral motifs executed in turquoise, cobalt-blue and luster glazing. 1.Size: ~ 20.3 cm(8" Stonepaste(fritware) White& clear glaze(with possible overglaze of luster designs) and under glaze in cobalt blue. 1.The tile varies slightly in thickness: ~ 11 mm(Note the turquoise glaze on sides) 1.This tile exhibits iridescence(the rainbow-like effect) when viewed at different angles& is determined by the angle of incidence of the source of light. It is caused by interference effects of light reflected from several layers of weathering glaze, the same sort of effect that you see in your soap bubbles. The effect develops gradually over a period of centuries. 1.Iridescence is seen all over this tiles surface. 1.Not withstanding the lack of clear designs, this tile is an excellent study piece for scholars& students alike. Antique Art Tile made by the Hamilton Tile Works of Hamilton.Ohio. Unmarked on the back.But a well documented Hamilton design and grip back. Measures 3" x 3" x a nominal 1/2" thick. Art Nouveau styled sunflower in a deep chestnut brown glaze. Some fine,light abrasion to the glaze at center and a very light hairline scratch that can only be seen in certain light. Amazing and rare 8-1/8" Victorian era portrait tile made by The J + JG Low Tile Works of Chelsea. Ma. Olive green glaze. Incredible, detailed tile in high relief. Photos taken in natural light, the second in a shaded area. This tile spent it's entire life in a frame. The condition is impeccable, even the Snow White back. Light to moderate crazing that is inherent to any tile of this Age. Patent date of 1882. Low believed in tiles as art and they produced frames to accommodate their larger, figural tiles. Antique Aetco Trent Victorian Ceramic Art Tile Ultra Relief ! Majolica Rosette
Antique Victorian era ceramic fireplace tile more than likely made by the American encaustic tile company of Zanesville Ohio. Unmarked but American encaustic was known for dramatically hi relief tiles and this tile is about 1 1/2 inches thick at the center. Cream and caramel glaze the tile measures 6" x 6" x 0.5" thick at the edge and 1 1/2 inches thick at the center. I've never seen an American our tile this thick. Unmarked due to the incused back but a well-documented low design pictured in Norman Karlson's book on American art tiles. Fantastic portrait tile in a deep and rich teal blue glaze. The recessed area on the back was to compensate for the very high relief on the face and to keep the clay thickness consistent throughout the tile. This would help to keep the tile from warping during the firing or cooling process. I have seen this tile made with the flatpack and I have seen some that are warped. A small mark in front of the ear that is under/within the glaze and doesn't disrupt the surface. Another high end example of this tile. Beautiful olive glaze. This tile spent it's entire life in a frame and was ... morenever installed into a wall or fireplace. Beautiful classical figural reminiscent of American coins from the same 1880's period. I always think of the Morgan dollar when I see this tile. The color and condition combine for a lot of wow factor! I also have a similarly nice same tile in a blue glaze. Listed in another auction. Antique Ceramic Tile Green Leaf Floral 1900 Art Nouveau Majolica Italy Italian
This auction includes a lot of two(2) antique 6" square ceramic tiles! These Art Nouveau tiles are unmarked but fall in the Majolica design from Italy. The two tiles are in good condition for their age. Picked up at an estate sale recently. These tiles were gently removed from an early 1900 kitchen/dining room furniture piece. The ceramic is crazed but that does not deter from the overall beauty of these tiles. We offer two additional tiles from the same furniture piece for auction this week. The mustard yellow flower with green leaf pattern blended well with the green leaf pattern.

Antique Victorian era tile made by the Trent tile company of Trenton. New Jersey. Marked on the back. Measures 3" x 6" x 1/2" thick. Keep in mind that antique tiles from 1870-1930's varied in thickness,as they were set in"mud" and exact thickness was not critical. Art nouveau botanicals in a shell pink and green glaze. Small chip to the right side edge. The bottom right corner has an indent that is glazed over as made. Great-looking 100-year-old American Art tile! Beautiful antique Presse d Majolica Art Nouveau tile. Circa early 1 9 00's. In a very bright dark caramel color, tile is in nice cond ition. There is some damage at the lower edge although is not much visible from the front. Back of tile has been trimmed in a 45º angle(please check attached photos) Very thick and sh i n y glazing with beautiful crazing from age, back of the tile has been cleaned. And there are no marks. It measures 16 cm x 16 cm(6 1/4" square) I always t ry my best to combine shipping charges. In some cases it might not be possible since some tiles are shipped from a different location.
