The map depicts Mexico from the Yucatan north to what would soon become the Republic of Texas, the Louisiana Territory, and what would eventually be the U.S. States of New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, California, Nevada, Utah, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Colorado. This map is based largely on the maps of Alexander von Humboldt and Zebulon Pike. The general treatment of the Rocky Mountains is drawn directly from Humboldt important map of 1811, issued just 3 years prior. Cartographically Zatta offers little new information– for none was forthcoming form the Americas at the time– and derives most of this map from the work of Robert de Vaugondy, ... moresome 10 year prior. The mission settlements along the Rio del Nord(Rio Grande) are well noted, but other regions to the north and west remain paese incognito. Zatta sets the Rio del Palma as the northern border of New Spain(Mexico) and the border of Louisiana just west of the Mississippi, clearly defining the regional boundaries of Nuovo Messico roughly along the lines of early 19th century Texas. The Mississippi Valley itself is poorly represented, as is Florida, whose southern top is a network of islands and canals– a common if primitive attempt to describe the Everglades. The lower left bears an interesting title cartouche decorated with curious flora supposedly indigenous to the region. Published in Zatta's 1795 Atlante Novissimo a monumental four volume opus and one of the last great decorative atlases of the 18th century. Upper California offers numerous interesting elements, most specifically a colored and labeled Gold Region extending along the Sacramento River as far south as an oversized Lake Tule and Santa Cruz. The'Great Caravan Route' followed by covered wagons during the Westward Expansion is also noted as it snakes its way across northern Texans and southern California to Los Angeles. This is an 1871 engraved map of Texas. New Mexico& Indian Territory, with insets of the environs of New Orleans& Chicago. It measures 12.5 X 17 inches. Published by T. Edward Zell. Philadelphia. Map was engraved by J. Bartholomew. For history of the famous Bartholomew maps, see last paragraph below. We are unable to find many of these maps in the major dealers sites. The ones we did find had prices of $200- $500 and up and were not in as good a condition as this map. Be my guest. Go look for yourself. Paper shows minor age spots. Normal on most maps this age due to paper content. We have shown in the scans of the map and close ups to get a great idea of the beauty of the gentle hand coloring and detailed engraving. Original uncolored copper plate engraving as issued. Blank on verso. Dated in the plate. Engraved by Thomas Kitchin. Hydrographer to his Majesty. Published by T. Cadell. London. Image area is 20.0" w. X 12.0" h. Interesting and detailed map entitled"Map of European Settlements in Mexico or New Spain and the West Indies. This is one of Kitchin's most famous maps as identified in Tooley's Dictionary of Map Makers. Tecas" and Texas are shown with settlements at Cenis and Presidio. Texas is part of the" New Kingdom of Leon. There is a huge area called"Great Space of Land Unknown. Lasalle's settlement of 1685 is shown near Galveston. Beautifully executed will frame nicely. Offered for sale is this antique hand colored map of Texas. New Mexico and Indian Territory from a circa 1870 MCNALLY'S SYSTEM OF GEOGRAPHY Book in fair overall condition. The map is marked number 19 and reads in the lower right corner, Drawn and Eng. by Oliver J. Stuart, N.Y. It is page 46 out of the book. It measures about 12" by 10" There is a partial tear at the top of the map as pictured. It has light wear on the edges and light yellowing and foxing. I purchased the geography book at an auction and it was missing the first 8 pages so I do not have an exact date, but Colorado was still a territory and Nebraska was a state, so this should put it in the late 1860's to early 1870's. Similarly, Texas, though clearly separated from Mexico is not clearly part of the United States. These omissions suggest that Tallis was reluctant to significantly update his map plates to reflect the changing political situation in the American Southwest. Offers several beautiful vignettes drawn by H. Warren and J. Rogers depicting the Ruins at Uxmal, Yucatan, panning gold in California, and Mexican Peasantry.
