Cartographer: Alvin Jewett Johnson(September 23. 1827- April 22, 1884) was a prolific American map publisher active from 1856 to the mid-1880s. Johnson was born into a poor family in Wallingford, Vermont where he received only a based public education. He is known to have worked as school teacher for several years before moving to Richmond, Virginia. Johnson got his first taste of the map business and a salesman and book canvasser for J. H. Colton and company. The earliest Johnson maps were published with D. Griffing Johnson(no clear relation) and date to the mid-1850s, however it was not until 1860 that the Johnson firm published its first significant work, the Johnson's New Illustrated(Steel Plate) Family Atlas. General Description: 1. Strikingly interesting and highly detailed map. Original hand coloring. The map depicts in great detail all of the geographical information known at the time the map was published. 1888 Original Antique Color Maps of Okla.Indian TY & Alaska , from Gaskell Atlas
This offering features an original antique one-page. Highly detailed, multi-color map of INDIAN TERRITORY(later formed the State of Oklahoma) with an equal sized high-quality map of ALASKA on the back. The maps were rescued from Gaskell's Atlas of the World, published in 1888, and which was in unsalvageable condition. The last two photos validate the origin of the maps and the publishing date. The maps were specially engraved for inclusion in this Gaskell atlas and are contemporary with the publishing date. The Indian Territory map shows the various tribe locations within what is now Oklahoma. The Alaska map was created when the state was a"District" And even prior to its classification as a"Territory" Many current cities within the state did not exist in 1888, but Sitka, originally a Russian outpost, appears to be ... moreone of the largest cities in the district in 1888. Both maps have a page size of 11-1/4" wide x 13-1/2" long. The Indian Territory map has an image size of 9-5/8" wide x 12-1/8" long and the Alaska map has an image size of 9-5/8" wide x 12-3/8" long. The map's condition is excellent. With no holes or tears in the image nor the margin, no edge loss, and no noticeable yellowing of the paper with age. The map colors are exceptionally varied. We have included a close-up of the bottom left section of the Texas map with insets of Galveston Bay and Sabine Lake. The sheet measures approximately 17⅛ inches by 14⅝ inches. Both maps from border to border measure approximately 14⅞ inches by 11⅞ inches. Condition is good with no problems evident. There is a tiny loss at the upper right corner on the Texas side(corresponding to the bottom left corner on the Arkansas side) which I wanted to cite for the record even though it is inconsequential. Date: 1835(published) Dimensions: 12.5 x 10.5 inches(31.75 x 26.7 cm) This is a rare example of Burr’s map of Missouri out of“A New Universal Atlas; Comprising Separate Maps Of all the Principal Empires. Kingdoms& States throughout the World, published in 1835. As noted by Rumsey, this is an earlier example because of the lack of a page number. While the atlas was started by Burr, the majority of it was completed by Thomas Illman as Burr other obligations as an official cartographer for the U.S. Post Office. All the maps completed in Burr’s style. In this map. The state of Missouri consists of 30 counties that remain within the environs of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. All other lands not within a county are referred to a Bounty Lands which were lands set aside as compensation ... morefor volunteer veterans. 1897 Eastern& Western Texas Two Original Colored 15" x 10.5" Detailed Maps This listing is for two original 1897 color lithographic maps of the Eastern and Western Portions of Texas. These are extraordinarily detailed maps for their size and include seemingly every city and town. As well as, counties, railroad lines, geographical references, including hills, mountains, lakes, rivers, ponds, islands and prominent points if applicable. The maps are on standard weight paper and each measures 16.5 x 11.75 inches including ample margins that are somewhat greater than shown in the picture. The condition overall is fine and as shown in the pictures. The paper is over 100 years old and is age toned as should be expected. The map is a high resolution scan and therefore the size and details may seem to be greater than what is viewed with ... morethe naked eye. These maps were tipped into the atlas and therefore contain no staple marks. Most of the maps are double-page and therefore have a crease down the center with the tipping strip on the reverse. Residual of the tipped-in strip remains but it could be removed or trimmed prior to matting and framing. The crease may be pressed flat but it will likely never completely disappear. It should also be expected that the page edges will show some minor wear and soiling but the margins are sufficient that the wear will not be noticeable after being matted and framed. As should be expected. There is age toning as the result of being exposed to air and more specifically moisture in the air. The paper is cream toned which tends to get slightly darker toward the edges. The fold in the center is darker as well. There are no water stains, nor unexpected odors. The reverse side is largely blank having only the map number and name in each corner. There is no post printing damage or faults such as offsetting, tears, holes, foxing, or writing marks, other than what would be disclosed herein.
