Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of this double page map printed on a single sheet is a very impressive 29.25" x 18.5" It was fastened to the atlas by a separate stub(still attached) so that the entire map could be on one page rather than two. The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the ... moretime of publication 157 years ago. This map includes Texas. Including an inset map of Northern Texas, plus plans of Galveston Bay and Sabine Lake. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the map is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. And the printing is sharp and clear. The reverse side is blank except for a name along with a hotel address in Providence. RI. There is also some shadows of advertising from an adjacent page on one side of the blank, but it is not visible on the map itself. See the images for condition details. But frankly, the images really don't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay. As well as some of the better advertisements. COLTON 1861 TEXAS MAP OF COUNTIES
I came across these copies of early Texas Colton maps at a recent auction. I have 3 1855 copies and one 1861 copy. The 1861 will be listed separately in the auction format. These apparently were sent at some unknown-to-me year as Christmas gifts to friends of the Anne and Edward Clark family. They have all been rolled for years and will come to the buyer in a mailing tube. So if the buyer(s) wants to have these framed, I would suggest a professional framer who can properly flatten and matte, to cover the family's name and yet maintain the beautiful borders. The starting pricing reflects the possible potential costs of future framing. The paper is pale ivory, matte, about the weight and texture of good drawing paper, with soft coloring. There is some mild crinkling and warping along the outside edges that shouldn't be of importance ... moreif they are to be framed. Colton maps were known for their beauty and detail, possible from steel engravings. The originals were hand water-colored and had stunning borders. The JH Colton Co. was in business from 1831-1890, and their services were in great demand by countries world over, and their maps were among the first to be copyrighted. This map is"Colton's New Map of the State of Texas" 1861. Now for the lectures and other icky stuff: Some eBay abusers-hot heads.
