Attractive late 19th century offset color lithographed printed map. Wonderfully detailed. A scarce early McNally map. Much less common than later issues after c. 1888-90. A wonderful map of this state. With hundreds of place names not typically found on smaller maps and a remarkable level of detail. In VG. Mostly clean condition, some gentle marginal toning[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] Will look very nice for display. Once framed. Sheet size measures c. 21" W x 15" H. Engraved area c. 19" W x 13" H. Folio. Original fold line as issued. 14594] Any defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. ... morenote: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. However, there is an earlier copyright date of 1860 along the bottom margin in small print that states"Entered according to an Act of Congress in the year 1860 by Augustus Mitchell in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington. Size: The map image measures approximately 11 by 13 inches on a 12 1/4 by 15 1/4" page(31x39cm) with a margin all around as seen in the pic. Condition: It is in Good to Very Good condition for its age. Printed on heavy paper, blank on the reverse with original handcolor as issued. It is basically as seen in the pics, with overall tonal aging and slight darkening around the edges. There are a few minor smudges around the margin, light dampstain on the right edge and one short half inch edge tear repaired on reverse, otherwise the map image is very clean in general with bright color and a nice antique quality that would frame up well. The pics are of the actual map and very accurate of condition and color in general, however the actual map looks much better. It is from The World in Minature or Diamond Atlas of Every Nation. Published in New Orleans by William Stuart. 1861. A facsimile copy of the title page will also be included for authenticity. The map is sometimes attributed to Sidney Morse and Gaston, who designed all the other maps in the atlas, which they had previous published in 1857 as the Diamond Atlas, before selling the copyrights to the publisher Stuart, who simply republished the atlas in New Orleans with the same maps; however, Stuart might ... morehave also designed it or had it designed specificially for the atlas as he had done with a more extensive Louisiana map that also first appeared in the atlas The Univ. of Texas library assigns the maker as unknown and places it after 1857 due to the counties included. The map is not matted nor framed, although we have professionally backed the reverse with Japanese paper for presevation. Overall, a rare map that is difficult to find in any condition. Size: The map image measures approximately 10 3/4 by 13 inches(27x33cm) on a 11 1/2 by 13 3/4" 29x35cm) page with a margin all around for framing as seen in the pic. Condition: The map is in Fair condition and basically as shown. It has been restored by backing with Japanese paper and a water soluable acid free glue. It is very stable now. Although it had split completely across the center fold and there is paper loss and internal tears, missing paper on the edges. A few minor spots but no distracting stains to mention. It is best to look at the detail pics above by hovering the mouse over them
