Upon collating, I find that two leaves are missing, between pp 149 and 153. Many of the pages/leaves are blank, with no page numbers, but are"counted" as though they were, so it's a bit difficult, but this is what it seems, at any rate. This is an 1871 engraved map of Texas. New Mexico& Indian Territory, with insets of the environs of New Orleans& Chicago. It measures 12.5 X 17 inches. Published by T. Edward Zell. Philadelphia. Map was engraved by J. Bartholomew. For history of the famous Bartholomew maps, see last paragraph below. We are unable to find many of these maps in the major dealers sites. The ones we did find had prices of $200- $500 and up and were not in as good a condition as this map. Be my guest. Go look for yourself. Paper shows minor age spots. Mississippi, And the eastern portions of Texas and Indian Territory as they appeared in 1853, which was carefully removed from a partial copy of SMITH'S QUARTO, OR SECOND BOOK IN GROGRAPHY. A CONCISE AND PRACTICAL SYSTEM OF GEOGRAPHY, FOR COMMON SCHOOLS, ACADEMIES, AND FAMILIES. Designed as a Sequel to the"First Book. NY: Daniel Burgess& Co(Late Cady& Burgess) copyright 1853. As you can see from the scans. The map is in fair condition. The map is age toned, there is some minor staining at the top border, and the lower right corner of the map has a crease. Offered for sale is this antique hand colored map of Texas. New Mexico and Indian Territory from a circa 1870 MCNALLY'S SYSTEM OF GEOGRAPHY Book in fair overall condition. The map is marked number 19 and reads in the lower right corner, Drawn and Eng. by Oliver J. Stuart, N.Y. It is page 46 out of the book. It measures about 12" by 10" There is a partial tear at the top of the map as pictured. It has light wear on the edges and light yellowing and foxing. I purchased the geography book at an auction and it was missing the first 8 pages so I do not have an exact date, but Colorado was still a territory and Nebraska was a state, so this should put it in the late 1860's to early 1870's. This map is colored to show the Republic of Texas as well as its claimed areas. Extending west and north to Taos in present-day New Mexico. Austin is the capital, and the area north of Nacogdoches is labeled"Extensive Prairies. The region south of Sabine Lake is marked"Herds of Buffaloes and Wild Horses, and the"Mustang Desert" is located north of Matamoras. The map also labels a large Indian Territory. Reaching from Arkansas to 42° north latitude. It shows a large Oregon Territory, extending into present-day Canada. Missouri Territory extends from the Rocky Mountains to the"Grand Detour" on the Missouri River. Iowa Territory ... moreruns from Warsaw to Lord Selkirk's Settlement at the Canadian border. Wisconsin Territory extends north to Lake of the Woods and Grand Portage. The northern border of Maine has not yet been finalized. And there are dozens of named Indian tribes, including Comanche, Sioux, Pawnee, Otoe, Creek, Shoshone, Choctaw, Nez Perce, Cherokee, Blackfeet, Shawnee, and more. It is drawn at a scale of approximately 70 miles to the inch. It also includes small unrelated small inset maps of the cities and areas surrounding Chicago and New Orleans. The map measures 12.5 x 17 inches. And is blank on the back. It is in Fine condition. The map is attractively printed in color. It identifies the sites of at least 20 army forts in the region. And clearly delineates the county lines in each political entity. New Mexico is shown as then subdivided into 13 counties. Versus the 33 counties found in the present day state. The huge area of Texas west of the 100° W. Longitude and north of 30° Latitude(including the entire ... morePanhandle) is divided into only the counties of Pecos. Presidio, El Paso; and Bexar and Young Territories. Indian Territory is divided into"Cherokee Nation. Choctaw Nation, Chickasaw Nation, Creek Country, Leased Indian Country, and smaller sections labelled: Seminole Country Ceded to the U.S. Ceded by the Creeks to the U.S. plus very small pieces in the northeastern corner for"Senecas, Senecas& Shawnees, and"Quasaws. The credit lines in small print below the map say: Engraved& Printed in Colours— by J. Bartholomew T. Ellwood Zell. Davis& Co. Philadelphia. The map is undated on the plate.
