Description We are proud to be able to offer a fine example of a hand colored engraved map of the individual states of the southern portion of the United States. This fine map features East and West Florida to the south. Georgia(which extends all the way to the Mississippi river) South and ... moreNorth Carolina, Tenasee" Kentucky, Virginia and the other states in the northeast portion of the US. John Thomson. Working in Edinburgh, was one of the leading British cartographers and his maps are good evidence of the quality of work issued in Great Britain at the time. This map was issued at an interesting period in the history of the American southeast. The state of Georgia is of particular note. For its borders are shown as they were in 1798 just before the Mississippi Territory was established, extending from the Atlantic to the Mississippi. It is not unusual for a British map maker to be late in reflecting internal American information on his maps, but the nearly twenty year lapse here makes one wonder whether Thomson was in fact a Georgian chauvinist. While somewhat anachronistic, the information of settlements, rivers, mountains, and ethnological details is fascinating. This fine map is guaranteed to be completely original. This map. This very attractive double page map sheet of OKLAHOMA AND INDIAN TERRITORY is from the 1899 printing of The Century Atlas of the World. The map itself is dated 1897. The atlas was"Prepared under the superintendence of Benjamin E. Smith. A.M. and published by The Century Company, New York. The highly prized maps in this atlas were engraved by The Matthews-Northrup Company of Buffalo, NY. The maps from The Century Atlas are acknowledged to be among the finest of the late 19th century. Displaying plenty of sharp detail. Attractive colors, and good margins for framing. The page is about 12 1/2 by 17 inches in size. The reverse is blank. The page has a vertical center fold. As published. The map clearly shows areas occupied by various Indian tribes within the borders of Indian Territory-Cherokee Nation. Creek Nation, Choctaw Nation, Chickasaw ... moreNation, and Seminole Nation. Within the borders of Oklahoma are areas labelled"Osage Nation" and"Kiowas, Comanches and Apaches. This beautiful map was printed in the O.W. Gray National Atlas. It was drawn by Frank A. Gray who did many of the outstanding maps for the Gray Atlases of the period. Accurate to about 1876 in the post Civil War/Reconstruction era as the railroads were beginning to expand again and the great Cattle Trails were still in progress. This fine map is full of detail. The Comanche's and Kiowa's were still a threat. Most of the Counties had been organized and were on the map but many were still not functional in the Panhandle, the LLano Estacado area and in the far west. In Indian Territory. Greer County is notated as claimed ... moreby Texas in that famous border dispute. Several maps of this period show Galveston which was the major portal into Texas. But in addition this map shows the Galveston Harbor sounding chart(Lower right) as well as very early images of the city of Austin(Lower left) a small map of the the River System's of Texas(Upper right) and an elevation map of Texas and Indian Territory at the Upper Left. There are many long lost place names and there are fantasy projections of proposed railroads that were either located elsewhere or never built. This is one of the few major post-Civil War maps that shows most of the entire state of Texas without chopping off either the Panhandle or the western sections which adds greatly to the visual appeal. A very large part of Indian Territory and a little of New Mexico is shown in full color and detail. The map features a very effect and attractive and is coupled with effective but subtle Handwashed coloring. An ORIGINAL antique 1757 French map of LOUISIANE from L'HISTOIRE GENERALE DES VOYAGES. J. N. BELLIN was the official engraver to the Marine at the time and produced a number of the maps published in L'HISTOIRE. Possibly the most accurate map of the region at the time it shows scores of settlements. Forts, and Indian Villages along the coast and inland of what is now the Southeast from the Atlantic Coast to west Texas. A number of Indian Tribes are named as well including the APACHES, CHICACHAS, TCHATAS, and CHERAQUIS. Note from the photos that the date 1757 is printed in the legend. Note also that the map has significant old damage from bookworm moths. The first 4 pictures are taken with a plain white background while the last picture is taken with a dark background to illustrate the damage. Otherwise the paper is still supple with ... moreno stains and the original plate impression around the entire periphery. This offering features a one-page Rand McNally. Detailed, multi-color map of Oklahoma and Indian Territory, prior to statehood. The map was extracted from the Library Atlas of the World, published in 1894 by Rand McNally& Co. and which was in unsalvageable condition. The last three photos validate the origin of the map and the publishing date. This is a very interesting map, illustrating the tribal locations within area that is now the state of Oklahoma. This map has a page size of 10-3/8" wide x 13-3/4" long. And an image size of 9-1/8" wide x 12-1/2" long. The map's condition is excellent, with no holes in the image, and only a few small tears in the white margin and edge of image, and some yellowing of the paper with age. Six different colors show the relative density in various regions from less than 2 to over 90 persons per square mile. In addition there are 11 red stars printed on the map with dates from 1790 to 1890. These show the geographic center of the U.S. population as it slowly shifted westward every 10 years. In 1790 it was centered near Baltimore but by 1890 it was just south of Indianapolis. Date(1892) is printed along the lower border. VERY LARGE ORIGINAL 1857 TEXAS MAP FROM COLTON US ATLAS HAND COLORED
Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of this double page map printed on a single sheet is a very impressive 29.25" x 18.5" It was fastened to the atlas by a separate stub(still attached) so that the entire map could be on one page rather than two. The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the ... moretime of publication 157 years ago. This map includes Texas. Including an inset map of Northern Texas, plus plans of Galveston Bay and Sabine Lake. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the map is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. And the printing is sharp and clear. The reverse side is blank except for a name along with a hotel address in Providence. RI. There is also some shadows of advertising from an adjacent page on one side of the blank, but it is not visible on the map itself. See the images for condition details. This beautiful OLD map of the Western half of United States probably came from a very old atlas. From before 1900. It is dated 1891. It shows some of the"Indian Territory" and marks it accordingly. UNFORTUNATELY. MY SCANNER CLIPPED THE RIGHT HALF SOME. There is another inch of map on the actual map. It has a fold from where it was halved to fit in the format of the book. 1888 Original Antique Color Maps of Okla.Indian TY & Alaska , from Gaskell Atlas
This offering features an original antique one-page. Highly detailed, multi-color map of INDIAN TERRITORY(later formed the State of Oklahoma) with an equal sized high-quality map of ALASKA on the back. The maps were rescued from Gaskell's Atlas of the World, published in 1888, and which was in unsalvageable condition. The last two photos validate the origin of the maps and the publishing date. The maps were specially engraved for inclusion in this Gaskell atlas and are contemporary with the publishing date. The Indian Territory map shows the various tribe locations within what is now Oklahoma. The Alaska map was created when the state was a"District" And even prior to its classification as a"Territory" Many current cities within the state did not exist in 1888, but Sitka, originally a Russian outpost, appears to be ... moreone of the largest cities in the district in 1888. Both maps have a page size of 11-1/4" wide x 13-1/2" long. The Indian Territory map has an image size of 9-5/8" wide x 12-1/8" long and the Alaska map has an image size of 9-5/8" wide x 12-3/8" long. The map's condition is excellent. With no holes or tears in the image nor the margin, no edge loss, and no noticeable yellowing of the paper with age. The map colors are exceptionally varied. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire two antique state maps. Published well before they became states. This map will be carefully wrapped.
