Indian Territory and New Mexico In 1876 when this superb folio map of Texas was published by the S.A. Mitchell Co. The frontier was still in flux, and the western counties including those on the barren and little known llano estacado had not yet been formed from the early territories. This oversize limited edition reproduction brings out many normally hard to see features. In this transitional period. The railroads had only reached as far west as Fort Worth& San Antonio. Shown are the major Indian war trails, the military roads still connecting all the frontier forts and many now-forgotten place names. This is one of the few major post-Civil War maps that shows the entire ... morestate of Texas without chopping off either the Panhandle or the western sections which adds greatly to the visual appeal. In addition. A very large part of Indian Territory and New Mexico is shown in full color and detail. The map features the trademark grapevine border coupled with effective but subtle hand wash coloring. This is in direct contrast to the crude& garish"checkerboard" look of many of its contemporaries. This may be one of the most beautiful of the many Mitchell maps of Texas. And possibly one of the best looking Texas maps ever published. 1908 FOLDING POCKET LAND SALES MAP OF TEXAS - LAND FOR SALE IN SHERMAN COUNTY
Very rare and fantastic. Original 1908 Folding Pocket Map of Texas highlighting land for sale in the panhandle county of Sherman by the American Farm Lands Association. This fascinating map is titled on the paper cover"Map of Texas" with further text that reads"Get a Nice. Choice Level Farm in Sherman County Texas/ No Money Down/ No Interest/ No Brokerage/ No Taxes" It was issued by American Farm Lands Association of Chicago in conjunction with the Rock Island Railroad which ran through Sherman County. The folding map itself measures approx. 20 1/2" by 9" and is titled in the cartouche"Map of Texas/ with Population and Location of Principle Towns and Cities According to the latest Reliable Statistics" 1908. Published by the Kenyon Company of Des Moines. Iowa. The Map shows Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico ... morewith the Texas Counties brightly colored. There is a bull's-eye over Sherman County and areas of overprinted advertising text for the"good, rich, level farm land" being sold- a check of census records shows that in 1900 the population of Sherman County(923.2 sq. miles) was 104. The back side of the Map lists all of the cities and towns in Texas with their populations(many with populations below 20 and even a dozen or more with populations under 10) The Map is folded into printed paper covers that measure 3" by 5 1/2" with text on the back cover explaining"The Reason Why We Can Not Pay Your Railroad Fare to Texas" to view the land before buying. The text states that the company is selling the property at such a low price that it cannot afford to pay the way of prospective buyer to view the land- more likely there was a fear that the unpopulated state of the county would be a"turn off" to perspective buyers.
