Original 1851 Craven Lighthouse Survey Map ARANSAS PASS Mustang Island Texas Original antique lithographed United States Coast Survey map of Aransas Pass on the coast of Texas. Printed more than 161 years ago. The image area measures 19 x 20.5 cm[7-1/2" x 8-1/8" And the map is drawn on a scale of 1:30,000. It shows soundings, gives sailing directions for approaching mariners, and locates the proposed site for a lightship, along with the notation: Lighthouse is not recommended. The survey had been under the command of Lieutenant Tunis Augustus Macdonough Craven after Congress had authorized the placement of a lighthouse at the pass. Which leads to the port of Corpus Christi, located twenty miles or so to the west. Craven's recommendation. However, was that a lightship be used to mark the pass, as noted on this map. Two years ... morelater a second survey reversed Craven's recommendation, and a lighthouse was built at the pass in 1857. The scans below give a closer look at this map: During the Civil War. Lieutenant Craven was promoted to Commander, United States Navy. He died aboard the Tecumseh in the Battle of Mobile Bay. 1864, his brave sacrifice immortalized in verse by English poet Henry Newbolt. This is an original. Authentic U.S. Coast Survey document, not a reproduction or modern reprint. And it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. It is titled Sketch I No. 5 Aransas Pass. Coast of Texas and was issued in a report to the 1st Session of the 32nd congress by the Superintendent of the Coast Survey. Published in Washington, D.C. in 1852 and printed by Robert Armstrong. Condition: This map is in very good condition. With no marks. Rips, or tears. 1854 MAP OF GALVESTON BAY, in walnut frame. U.S. Coast Survey 1848-1852.
This map was produced by the U.S. Coast Survey in 1854 from its survey in Section 9 of the Galveston Bay area done between 1848 and 1852. The map. Without margins, measures 7 1/2" x 11, and is framed in a walnut frame with outer measurements of 9 3/8" x 13. There is a faint old vertical crease, as it was originally bound, but the map is generally quite clean, and nicely detailed, showing Galveston Bay, the East Bay, West Bay, Oyster Bay, and as far West as Matagorda Bay. The easternmost point is Turtle Bay at the end of Galveston Bay. I apologize for the fuzzy scans but I don't want to take the map out of the frame to get it closer to the scanner, so much is lost in the translation, but it does appear crisp at close viewing. Ready for hanging, with glass mount.

Printed more than 160 years ago. The image area measures 28 x 22 cm[11" x 8-3/4" And the map is drawn on a scale of 1:40,000. It shows soundings and bottom conditions and gives sailing directions for approaching mariners. It locates a proposed site for a lighthouse. On the Texas side of the Sabine River, but the light was built, in 1856 on the Louisiana side, across from the present location of the town of Sabine Pass, Texas. The US Congress authorized an ambitious plan to map the portion of the United States west of the 100th meridian at a scale of 8 miles to the inch. This plan necessitated what became known as the Wheeler Survey. Lasting until 1879, when the survey, along with the King and Powell Surveys.
