Birds Eye View of NEW BRAUNFELS Comal County TEXAS 1881 by Augustus Koch This is a rare original hand colored 1881 lithograph of New Braunfels Comal County Texas city street map originally drawn by Agustus Koch. It is complete with 16 historical places numbered and identified along the bottom of the map as mentioned in the map information below. This if from the Estate of Marijane Fischer Stafford who is a direct descendant of the Fischer Family of New Braunfels. Her father was Carlo Fischer. The last family member to have owned the Eiband and Fischer store. It was the largest department store in Texas located on the Main Plaza in New Braunfels back in 1861. In 1947 there was a fire and most of the store burned down. This lithograph was most likely hanging in the annex building at the time of the fire since it was not destroyed. This would ... morebe the cause of the smoke damage and discoloration to the print. It was later moved to the Fischer family home. It measures 29 1/2" x 20 1/4" inside frame dimension. Outside frame dimension 32 3/8" x 23 1/2" It has a wooden back with wire for hanging. It will be shipped framed with glass to protect the map from damage. The map has not been removed from the frame. Map information: New Braunfels in 1881 In depicting New Braunfels. Founded in 1845 under the auspices of the Adelsverein(also known as the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas) Augustus Koch chose the perspective from the Sophienburg(Fort Sophia) the headquarters that Prince Solms-Braunfels established for the colony. Built on a hill on the south side of the new settlement with a view of the Comal River and its confluence with Comal Creek, the Sophienburg was to have included a headquarters building and a fort. The fort was never completed, but the original log cabin headquarters building(14 on map) shown in the center foreground of the print, is easily recognizable because of the sagging roof that seems about to collapse.
