This map was produced by the U.S. Coast Survey in 1854 from its survey in Section 9 of the Galveston Bay area done between 1848 and 1852. The map. Without margins, measures 7 1/2" x 11, and is framed in a walnut frame with outer measurements of 9 3/8" x 13. There is a faint old vertical crease, as it was originally bound, but the map is generally quite clean, and nicely detailed, showing Galveston Bay, the East Bay, West Bay, Oyster Bay, and as far West as Matagorda Bay. The easternmost point is Turtle Bay at the end of Galveston Bay. I apologize for the fuzzy scans but I don't want to take the map out of the frame to get it closer to the scanner, so much is lost in the translation, but it does appear crisp at close viewing. Ready for hanging, with glass mount.

Printed more than 160 years ago. The image area measures 28 x 22 cm[11" x 8-3/4" And the map is drawn on a scale of 1:40,000. It shows soundings and bottom conditions and gives sailing directions for approaching mariners. It locates a proposed site for a lighthouse. On the Texas side of the Sabine River, but the light was built, in 1856 on the Louisiana side, across from the present location of the town of Sabine Pass, Texas.
