The map shows many cities and counties in the eastern part of the state. The western part of the state shows Indian areas and labels like"sulphur water" salt pond" and"horsehead crossing" An inset shows the northern part of the state. A second inset shows the vicinity of Galveston city and bay. Map is in good condition with minor soiling. Image measures 10 5/8"x 8 1/8" NOT A REPRODUCTION. 1846 Very Early 36"x24" Stovepipe" Statehood Map of Texas by S.A. Mitchell(Reproduction) Great Gift! In 1846 when this historic Texas reproduction map was published by S.A. Mitchell. Sr. the boundaries of the state were still unsettled. The"stovepipe" extension reaching to the 42nd parallel is shown and the boundaries around El Paso in far west Texas are still unresolved and will be until 1850. The area west of Dallas and Fort Worth was almost entirely wild and the llano estacado atop the Caprock was largely unknown territory. This early map also shows Indian Territory which had been formed in the 1830's as well as Taos and Santa Fe which had been claimed by the Texas Republic. This is one of the few early maps that shows the entire state of Texas without truncation. Which adds greatly to visual appeal. This limited ... moreedition print is far larger than the original which was published in a Mitchell's Geography at a small size. it is a tribute to the original engravers that this map. Even at four times the original size, is still razor sharp. The sample picture shown is at very low Internet resolution and reduced in size. It does not even begin to show the detail and quality of the actual map. It is basically as seen in the pics, with overall tonal aging and slight darkening around the edges. There are a few minor smudges around the margin, light dampstain on the right edge and one short half inch edge tear repaired on reverse, otherwise the map image is very clean in general with bright color and a nice antique quality that would frame up well. The pics are of the actual map and very accurate of condition and color in general, however the actual map looks much better. An ORIGINAL antique map of TEXAS from MITCHELL's SCHOOL ATLAS. 1857. Most of the western half of the State was still unsettled by white emigrants at the time and is shown occupied by APACHES, COMANCHES and LIPANS. Several stagecoach routes are shown the western half of the State including the Santa Fe Trail. There were as yet no railroads in the State at this early date but the map shows the location of several battle sites from the recent Texas War of Independence and the Mexican American War. An inset map of the Galveston area is at the lower left. The copyright date 1852 is printed along the lower border but the map is from an 1857 atlas as shown in the picture of the Title Page. 1852 Map Of Texas: This map measures 8" x 10 1/2" plus margins and is dated 1852 in the lower left corner(see picture) It is from an old School Atlas by S. Augustus Mitchell. The region south of Sabine Lake is marked"Herds of Buffaloes and Wild Horses, and the"Mustang Desert" is located north of Matamoras. The map also labels a large Indian Territory. Reaching from Arkansas to 42° north latitude. It shows a large Oregon Territory, extending into present-day Canada. 1854 Mitchell Map of Texas WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Map of the State of Texas From the Latest Authorities. Description: This is a fine example of S. A. Mitchell and J. H. Young's important 1854 map of Texas. Mitchell's map covers the entire state of Texas from the Red River Valley to the Rio Grande. And from El Paso to the Louisiana border. Texas's northern panhandle is included via an inset in the upper left quadrant. The whole is engraved and colored in Mitchell's distinctive style with green border work and vivid pastels. Political and topographical features are noted and color coded with elevation rendered by hachure. Though published as part of Mitchell's 1854 New General Atlas, this map is in fact unchanged from the 1850 state, as suggested by the copyright. Mitchell ordered this ... moremap re-engraved following the Compromise of 1850 in which, for monetary compensation, Texas agreed to surrender its claims to much of modern day New Mexico. Annotations in the left quadrants discuss the navigability of the Rio Grande for trade, the history of El Llano Estacado(Staked Plain) and note the route of Apache and Comanche incursions into Mexico. In the lower left quadrant there is an inset Map of the Vicinity of Galveston City. In the mid-19th century Galveston was one of the largest ports in the United States until devastated by a hurricane in 1900. Following the disaster, Galveston never revived as major maritime and commercial center. This map was drawn by J. H. Young and prepared by S. A. Mitchell for publication by the Philadelphia firm of Thomas Cowperthwait and Co. in the 1854 edition of Mitchell's New General Atlas. Dated and copyrighted, Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1852 by Thomas Cowperthwait and Co. in the Clerk's office of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
