There were as yet no railroads in the State at this early date but the map shows the location of several battle sites from the recent Texas War of Independence and the Mexican American War. What 7 years earlier had been the western edge of the Confederacy, the States are individually hand water colored. A few early railroads are shown and a few proposed routes extend into west TEXAS. But as yet no railroads had been completed west of Austin. In fact western TEXAS is still shown as the territory of the APACHES, COMANCHES, and KIOWAYS. The map measures 9 1/2 by 12 inches. 1864 TEXAS Map JOHNSON ATLAS CIVIL WAR Hand Water Colored ORIGINAL!!
An ORIGINAL antique 1864 map of TEXAS from JOHNSON'S New Illustrated FAMILY ATLAS. The counties are individually hand water colored but only the eastern 2/3 of the State had been settled at the time. A handful of early railroads are shown in the area of Houston but none extended further west than COLUMBUS in Colorado County. There is an interesting proposed railroad noted on the map. The HOUSTON& GUAYMAS RAILROAD. This railroad had been proposed as the original Transcontinental Railroad crossing TEXAS and northern MEXICO, but once the CIVIL WAR broke out, the route was scrapped and never completed. What makes Johnson's maps so desirable is that although many maps from this time period showed railroad routes. His also show major stagecoach and wagon roads. Original hand colored engraving as issued. Published by Johnson& Ward. Entered into US Congress by Alvin J. Johnson. Image area is 24.5" w by 16.25" h. including decorative borders. Interesting and detailed county and railroad map printed during the Civil War. Shows chief cities. County seats and road system. Entitled"Johnson's New Map of the State of Texas. The US Mail route is located. There is an inset map of Galveston Bay and another of Lake Sabine. Beautifully executed with attractive hand color will frame nicely. Overall good condition with moderate ageing. There is some typical toning and chipping in the margins for an item of this age. See photos. The centerfold has been reinforced with acid free material.
