Mexico and New Mexico, etc. Map was published by A.J. Johnson of New York entered according to an Act of Congress in 1866. An interesting period of Texas history in the first year after the end of the Civil War, this map demonstrates the well organized counties in eastern Texas in sharp contrast to the largely open areas of western Texas designated as: Presidio, Young Bexar, and El Paso. Occasional roads and sites along the roads are noted(ie: Lower Presidio road, Upper Presidio roads, Lareda Road, waterholes including Wild China waterhole and Mustang waterhole, etc. Railroad lines are shown in the state as small printed tracks- often without the railroad ... morename. The printed inner map block along the bottom of the map depicts New Mexico's Indian Territory and specifically notes; Northern and Middle Commanches along with Kioways. There were as yet no railroads in the State at this early date but the map shows the location of several battle sites from the recent Texas War of Independence and the Mexican American War. Offered for sale is this antique hand colored map of Texas. New Mexico and Indian Territory from a circa 1870 MCNALLY'S SYSTEM OF GEOGRAPHY Book in fair overall condition. The map is marked number 19 and reads in the lower right corner, Drawn and Eng. by Oliver J. Stuart, N.Y. It is page 46 out of the book. It measures about 12" by 10" There is a partial tear at the top of the map as pictured. It has light wear on the edges and light yellowing and foxing. I purchased the geography book at an auction and it was missing the first 8 pages so I do not have an exact date, but Colorado was still a territory and Nebraska was a state, so this should put it in the late 1860's to early 1870's. VERY LARGE ORIGINAL 1857 TEXAS MAP FROM COLTON US ATLAS HAND COLORED
Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America. The scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of this double page map printed on a single sheet is a very impressive 29.25" x 18.5" It was fastened to the atlas by a separate stub(still attached) so that the entire map could be on one page rather than two. The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show the various counties and other divisions. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the ... moretime of publication 157 years ago. This map includes Texas. Including an inset map of Northern Texas, plus plans of Galveston Bay and Sabine Lake. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, otherwise the map is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. And the printing is sharp and clear. The reverse side is blank except for a name along with a hotel address in Providence. RI. There is also some shadows of advertising from an adjacent page on one side of the blank, but it is not visible on the map itself. See the images for condition details. But frankly, the images really don't do it any justice. We are/will be offering many of these maps on eBay. As well as some of the better advertisements. A handful of early railroads are shown in the area of Houston but none extended further west than COLUMBUS in Colorado County. There is an interesting proposed railroad noted on the map. The HOUSTON& GUAYMAS RAILROAD. This railroad had been proposed as the original Transcontinental Railroad crossing TEXAS and northern MEXICO, but once the CIVIL WAR broke out, the route was scrapped and never completed. What makes Johnson's maps so desirable is that although many maps from this time period showed railroad routes. His also show major stagecoach and wagon roads.
