Printed in the mid 19th century in Germany, on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. Of particular note for the depiction of all of Texas at this date. As well as Arizona, New Mexico and Central America across to Honduras. In Good or better condition. Some visible age spotting and foxing as seen, but otherwise clean overall. Remains a visually attractive old map[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] A nice impression of an interesting and fairly uncommon antique map. Good example of German lithographic cartography from this era. Any minor defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. Sheet measures c. 17" W x 14 1/2" H. Engraved area measures c. 16" W x 13" H. 15672] note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. Genuine. Antique map of the State of Texas from Augustus Mitchell's School and Family Geography, 1852. This colorful steel plate engraving by J H Young has original hand coloring. The map shows many cities and counties in the eastern part of the state. The western part of the state shows Indian areas and labels like"sulphur water" salt pond" and"horsehead crossing" An inset shows the northern part of the state. A second inset shows the vicinity of Galveston city and bay. Map is in good condition with minor soiling. Image measures 10 5/8"x 8 1/8" NOT A REPRODUCTION. Mexico and New Mexico, etc. Map was published by A.J. Johnson of New York entered according to an Act of Congress in 1866. An interesting period of Texas history in the first year after the end of the Civil War, this map demonstrates the well organized counties in eastern Texas in sharp contrast to the largely open areas of western Texas designated as: Presidio, Young Bexar, and El Paso. Occasional roads and sites along the roads are noted(ie: Lower Presidio road, Upper Presidio roads, Lareda Road, waterholes including Wild China waterhole and Mustang waterhole, etc. Railroad lines are shown in the state as small printed tracks- often without the railroad ... morename. The printed inner map block along the bottom of the map depicts New Mexico's Indian Territory and specifically notes; Northern and Middle Commanches along with Kioways. Framed, these make great wall decor for an office, den or just about any room in the house. Condition: Good. Lots of dark aging around the margins. Which just adds to the appeal of the old maps. An ORIGINAL antique 1757 French map of LOUISIANE from L'HISTOIRE GENERALE DES VOYAGES. J. N. BELLIN was the official engraver to the Marine at the time and produced a number of the maps published in L'HISTOIRE. Possibly the most accurate map of the region at the time it shows scores of settlements. Forts, and Indian Villages along the coast and inland of what is now the Southeast from the Atlantic Coast to west Texas. A number of Indian Tribes are named as well including the APACHES, CHICACHAS, TCHATAS, and CHERAQUIS. Note from the photos that the date 1757 is printed in the legend. Great map with several fine insets. Including city plans of Galveston, Austin& the Entrance to Matagorda Bay. Printed on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. In Good++ to near VG or better condition. Mostly clean and attractive, minor light surface age wear, trivial signs of usage but overall remaining well worthy of ownership and display[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing.
