Water is very scarce. The population is confined to the towns and villages. The soil is perfectly sterile except in valleys which can be irrigated. The mountains afford a scanty pasturage for sheep and goats. Very good wheat is raised at San Fernando and Santa Rosa. Up for auction is a rich trove of primary source history on the early history of Texas. Entitled, in short, THE AUSTIN PAPERS. Edited by Eugene C. Barker. Originally published in the pages of the Annual Report of the American Historical Association for the Year 1919 and 1922, they are here printed in Washington by the Government Printing Office in 1924 and 1928, respectively. These two books contain Stephen F. Austins personal and diplomatic correspondence stretching from 1825 to 1834. In nearly 2000 pages. The papers from 1825 to 1827, were published as Part II of the second volume of the AHA in 1919, and there appears to have been an earlier volume in Part I which I do not have. The papers from 1828 to 1834, were published as Volume II of the AHA Report for 1922, with the first volume presumably having been on an entirely different subject. ... moreThis is confusing, but this is basically the complete run of Austins correspondence from 1825 to 1834, regardless of the confusing series of Volumes and Parts and dates on the front cover. Both are first editions in book form. Both are in NEAR FINE condition, with no evidence of former library ownership, which is quite rare with these books, which were normally only kept in by libraries. A bookplate was removed from the 1922 volume, but this is the only evidence of ownership. A vast treasure trove of early information on Texas. And must for any library of Western Americana and especially of the early Republic of Texas. Large and heavy books. This is a RARE. Antique, published map dated 1835. It is a map of the Original Austin Colony and shows the rivers and Indian villages at that time. It was folded and probably came from an old book. And has been taped together where the map separated at the fold. It measures approximately 10 inches by 12 1/2 inches and was compiled by Stephen F. Austin and published by H. S. Many of them Anglo-Americans. The first group of colonists. Known as the Old Three Hundred. Arrived in 1822 to settle an empresarial grant that had been given to Stephen F. Austin by the Spanish. The group settled along ... morethe Brazos River. Ranging from the near present-day Houston to Dallas. Shortly after they arrived. Austin learned that the new Mexican government had not ratified his father's land grant with Spain. He was forced to travel to Mexico City. 1,200 miles away, to get permission for his colony. During his time in the capitol, Austin impressed various important people in the government by offering to draw a map of Texas, to help remove sediment obstructing navigation of the Colorado River. And by promising to carry out an Indian pacification campaign. On February 18, 1823, ten months after Austin arrived in Mexico City, Agustin I approved his colonization contract. One month later. Agustin abdicated as emperor, and the newly created republican congress nullified all acts of his government, including Austin's colonization contract. Many of Austin's new friends in Mexico praised his integrity before the congress, and his contract was re-approved in mid-April. Texas Centennial Plate 1936 Stephen F. Austin
From the estate of a wealthy neurosurgeon in 2013 we present some beautiful plates commemorating the Texas Centennial in 1936. The plates were made in Czechoslovakia for the A. Harris Company in Dallas. Texas. Each plate measures 9.75” in diameter and bears a gold rim over a very thin. Dark blue scalloped border with small white stars. A larger border between this edge and center of the plate depicts Texas products and symbols. The top of each plate bears the Texas Lone Star surrounded by the words“TEXAS UNDER SIX FLAGS” and flanked by the six flags(three on each side) A banner beneath this picture reads“1836-1936. Today I offer the plates from this lovely estate. I am auctioning seven plates. Each on its own individual auction. I have two ship plates and two contemporary scene plates.
