Antique Cast Iron Window Grate Coal Chute Cross Architectural Salvage Harrisburg
Antique cast iron window grate. Salvaged from an old farmhouse in Harrisburg PA. It was used in the basement as a coal chute since it swings open. It has a nice crisscross design and a cross in the center and is very heavy. It has a handle on one end. The back side opposite of the handle has two holes for hinging it. The grate measures just over 11-5/8 inches wide and is 18-3/4 inches tall without the handle. Including the handle it is 20-1/2 inches tall. The sides are 7/8 inches thick. This grate does show some signs of age and wear since it is over 100 years old. It has some surface rust. Please view the pictures for details. Please let me know if you have any questions. Hello.This is for a gas valve that would run straight into your home with out a meter.In these parts we use to tap into our natural gas at the home and the gas would come through these Valves and into your home.This is a practice no longer encouraged because of the fires and death that would ensue.I found this at a site on the creek where a house was pushed into the creek when the new road was built back in the sixties.This is all I know as of now on this artifact from Mid western history. This is a delightfully charming antique ball and stick Victorian architectural wall hanging. I've had it hanging in a spare bedroom for many years. I just love the ball and stick look. This has been painted a flat white(ugly mahogany underneath) and is whimsical and charming. Especially pretty on a wall painted a bright or dark color.

This is very rare find. Large cast iron newel posts from the late 1800's with incredible design and quality. These posts are from the Sterling Hotel of Wilkes barre Pennsylvania. This hotel was frequented by Coal barons and other prosperous merchants of the time. It was even visited in the early 1900's by Eleanore Roosevelt. The lobby was stunning. And these were the stair railing posts that graced the stair case to the upper floors. please see other auctions for stair railing itself) The pictures above show the post after sandblasting the old crackley paint off. The iron under the paint remains in excellent condition. The auction price is for these posts sand blasted and restored. Highly Ornate wrought iron stair railing & balcony railing from late 1800's
This is very rare ornate wrought iron stair railing from the grand lobby of the Sterling hotel. There are floral and spiral leaf details that are rarely found in American iron anymore. This hotel was frequented by Coal barons and other prosperous merchants of the time. It was even visited in the early 1900's by Eleanore Roosevelt. The lobby was stunning. And this railing graced the grand lobby stair case on the first and ball room floors. The first two pictures show the iron as pictured in the hotel before it was taken out. The following pictures show pieces after uninstalling to show their condition. The last several pictures show a few sample pieces of both the stair and balcony railing that we had sandblasted to show you the quality and condition which is excellent! Cast Iron Folk Art Dove Gate Weight & Thistle " Very Rare"
For your consideration is a very rare cast iron gate weight in the form of a dove and a thistle gate weight. I believe they are from the early 1900's and show good wear. They could be wire brushed and soaked in linseed to bring out more detail and eliminate some of the rusty look but this is the way most people like it including me. The dove shows some crackely old repaint that only add to it's charm and measures approx 7 1/2 in by 5 3/4 by 2 1/2. It weighs between 4- 5lbs. The thistle does not have any paint but does show very nice detail and measures approx 3 3/4 x 2. The dove holds almost all of the value in this auction and is one of the most sought out items in the folk art category. It is the only one I have owned in over 38 years of collecting.
