Capital City Brick -1893 Worlds Fair: Vitrified Brick & Paving Co Topeka KS
Capital City Brick Topeka. Kansas Capital City Bricks. Lot of 4, made by the Capital City Vitrified Brick& Paving Co. The company started in the late 1880's just outside the Topeka, Kansas city limits. By 1893 it was awarded"the first premium for the finest vitrified brick at the World's Fair! Capital City's paving bricks are 3 times stronger than concrete, due to the unique method that they used. Their bricks were made of shale, the shale was crushed, mixed& moistened before passing through a machine that used immense pressure to form the bricks. After the bricks were cut in the correct size they went to the dry kilns that were steam heated. They remained in that kiln for 48 hrs then were transferred to Eudaly kilns& fired for 10 days! Twenty-Eight 28 Antique Advertising Paving Brick 1900 Vintage 4 Different Rare
Here is a grouping of very old commerical street paving bricks that date from around 1900. There are twenty-eight(28) bricks in all. The bricks were all made in Northeast Ohio by 4 different extinct brickyards doing business from the 1800's to about 1930. This type of paving brick. All featuring advertising, date from the 1900-1920 era. The brick companies represented are: Bula Block Company. Ashtabula, Ohio; Bessemer Youngstown Block, Youngstown, Ohio; Collinwood Block Company, Cleveland, Ohio; and, Metropolitan Block Company, Canton, Ohio. There are two types of blocks from Metropolitan. Of the 28 bricks. 13 are Bessemer, 6 from Metropolitan. 8 from Ashtabula. And 1 Collinwood. Laying brick to brick. They cover an area of 27" x 20" Or approximately 5.435 square feet. These bricks were all made from fired red Ohio clay. They ... moreare not the paving brick you see today! Today's bricks are often made of concrete. Not clay, and they are"wimps" compared to early 20th Century Bricks. Each brick is the standard paving brick size of their time: 9" x 3 1/2" x 4" thick. Or 126 cubic inches. They weigh 12 1/2" each! also the standard for the time. All together. This lot of bricks weighs 350 pounds! They give you a work-out when manipulating them on a project. But when installed, they reward you with the best looking patio, drive, or sidewalk you will find. These bricks are also very collectible. The brickyards represented made millions of such bricks that once lined the streets of Northeast Ohio. But today are difficult to find, even here, especially in this conditon. Advertising bricks of this era are also very collectible today, selling for $5.00-$10.00 or more each on ebay all the time. About half of these bricks were never installed, the others may have been used on streets, but are in good shape for what they've been through. Some have spots of tar on them. It measures 9 ¼” x 4 x 3 ¼” I did not clean the brick and there is some dirt between the letters as shown(I had back surgery and it is healing very slowly) A good cleaning would better bring out the letters and character.
