I conjecture this area held a relic of the saint whose figure was displayed on top and the varying depth of the hole suggests a downward angle that allowed the object displayed to be more easily viewed from below. Description This is a great set that was salvaged from a Philadelphia Victorian Home. They were originally fireplace mantel breasts. Both are made of walnut and are painted. They are similar but not exactly the same. There are thick applied carvings on both. The brown one measures 35.75 long by 11 tall. The white is 42 by 10 with the lower damaged section removed. Overall it is in good condition. There are misc. scratches and dings as it is antique. It could use a good cleaning but should clean up nicely. The white panel has a chip with some loss at the bottom corner. Also showing seam where 2 backer boards are joined. Please look at the pictures carefully.
