LOVELY OLD TILE designed by a collaboration between WILLIAM Morris/ William De Morgan of the aesthetics movement. This was produced about 25 years ago and is 6x6 inches and thick. I had several- most now sold and everyone who has bought one has loved it. This listing is a tile extravaganza as our charity has acquired some lovely and quite valuable tiles which I will be listing. GORGEOUS! Maw Tile Company. Red& Copper Lustre. 1870's. This tile along with similar others are being sold on seperate auction. You are bidding on ONE tile. They are from an old home in the heart of Chicago that I purchased over 25+ years ago. They are exactly as I purchased them. always plans to use them! carried them with me to four different houses! All were found in basement cellar. Once installed in fireplace surround I am sure. The tiles found were not a complete surround. There are different leaf& Floral leaf design motifs. Most likely designed by William De Morgan. Very beautiful and bold. These tiles are AMAZING! The pictures are so difficult to take as the copper lustre and reflecting glaze mirrors reflections. Tile measures 6" x 6" and is 3/8" thick. There are surface scratches and crazing. Pictures are ... morepart of the description. The pictures do not show how beaufiful this deep red. Coppery luster glaze really is! Each do have discoloration below the top surface glaze, most likely from when mounted on fireplace. I show one picture that includes all the tiles I purchased. I displayed this photo so you can see the different floral and leaf motif side by side. Also you can see in the pictures the differences in colortones as well. 1852 to 1969 Maw Tile Company was Founded by George and Arthur Maw. By the late Nineteenth Century, the company had become one of the world's largest decorative tile manufacturers. There is so much steep interesting information found on the internet if you like to research history. Maybe there is someone out there that has the other tiles to help complete this as a set! Extremely Rare & Unrecorded William De Morgan 6" Tile Sands End Mark 1888-1889,
Here we have a William De Morgan"unrecorded"6" floral tile.Dating from the Sands End period,1888-1897,of which is a superb subject and a very rare example,I have scoured every De Morgan book possible and I cannot even find the drawing for this in the V&A prints and drawings archive,which contains all of William De Morgan's working drawings.I have only ever seen two examples of this rare tile in 20 years of collecting,this being one and the other is in the famous"Elm House Collection" from which I purchased this one. The tile has really strong and stylised colours and the glaze is superb.I cannot name the tile or flower as up until now a drawing for this does not exist,it does have the odd nibble but please view the images closely to form your own opinion,a must for the collector as it will be a long time before ... moreyou see another one. RARE William De Morgan Lustre Tile Designed by J F Bentley at Carlton Towers VGC
Here we have an extremely rare and hard to find William De Morgan 6" lustre tile.Designed by the architect J F Bentley for use in fireplaces at Carlton Towers where Bentley designed the interiors of the partly completed Pugin building. I have only come across four of these tiles in 20 years of collecting De Morgan.Three of which were in my friends collection(please see William De Morgan Tiles by Jon Catleugh,my friend and World Authority on De Morgan tiles) and this one that once belonged in the late Peter Creffields collection The tile is in good condition for its age but does have the odd nibble to edges.Light surface scratches when turned into the light and traces of mortar around the edges,so please view the images to form your own opinion,it is also on a bought in Wedgwood blank used before De Morgan was making his own tiles. Here we have a stunning 8 inch William De Morgan Double Carnation tile in Blue dating from the Merton Abbey period 1882-1888.Please see William de Morgan tiles by Jon Catleugh page 81.Plate 90 for a similar example. Very Rare William De Morgan 6" Relief Tile Rose & Daisy Ruby Red & Golden Lustre
Here we have a lovely example of a stylised and extremely rare William De Morgan 6"Rose and Daisy tile in relief painted in Ruby red and golden lustre.A rare experimental piece by Halsey Ricardo based on a design from the early Chelsea period,but dating from Early Fulham Period,complete with Sands End mark for Early Fulham,1888-1897.For a similar design please see William De Morgan Tiles by Jon Catleugh,page 61,top right. This tile is ex Peter Creffield collection who was a good friend of Jon Catleugh and had a remarkable collection of Arts and Crafts tiles.If you knew or knew of Peter he used to do his own kind of repairs etc,this is one of those that has been touched in on the bottom right hand corner,all of which to me adds to the charm and story of this tile.
