Rare 19th Century Old English Polychrome Tiles: 4 Seasons- Josiah Wedgwood& Sons In 1878 Wedgwood produced these transfer printed scenes. In various colours on ceramic tiles. They were designed by Helen Miles, an artist extrodinaire at the Wedgewood factories. It is quite rare to find the polychrome painted tiles. In around 1900 the same patterns began appearing on plates and other flatware, with various old and new borders All tiles are marked JOSIAH WEDGWOOD& SONS ... moreETRURIA on the back. The only time Wedgwood used the back marking phrase, JOSIAH WEDGWOOD& SONS ETRURIA was on their tiles. The winter tile also has‘ENGLISH’ on the back. I believe these 4 tiles were collected to represent the seasons. Winter: Marked‘February’ a beautiful tile! 6” x 6” a young lad escorting his young love through a snowy forest Spring: Marked‘April’ shows April showers 6” x 6” a young lady with her little brother, both in stocking feet, holding an umbrella in the pouring rain. Summer: Unmarked(In the set it is July) 5 7/8" x 5 7/8" an older sister with her young brother at a ship yard/boat dock. Fall: Unmarked(in the set it is October) 5 7/8" x 5 7/8" A young lad with a walking stick and a pig with a stone brodge in the background. Condition: The fall tile has a small shallow chip out of the bottom right of the front of the tile only. The spring tile has a small shallow chip out of the top centre, the front only(see photos) Shipping: The actual cost of shipping will be calculated after the item is sold and depends on the location of the buyer and the buyer’s requirement for speed of delivery& insurance. 1879 Blue Wedgwood "August" Calendar Ceramic Tile by Helen J. A. Miles
Ca. 1879 Wedgwood“ August” ceramic 6” X 6” wall tile. This intense blue and white tile(so intense that it gives the transfer an almost flow blue look) comes from the“Old English 12 Months Series” drawn by Victorian artist Helen J.A.Miles( NOT Kate Greenaway as some erroneous ebay listings have stated) Helen Miles was a freelance illustrator of the same era who designed the Old English or Calendar series of tiles for Josiah Wedgwood. As well as illustrating multiple childrens books. Because the young women working in the tile factories who applied the transfers were often illiterate. A high percentage of this series had portions or even all of the lettering missing because the words had no meaning for them. Notice that only the A of August appears on this tile! This is a used tile salvaged from a home in the UK. Please inspect the photo carefully ... moreto insure there are no objectionable condition issues before bidding. Although there are no cracks. Some minor age& use related issues may exist. If you have any questions. You are encouraged to contact us directly and we will be more than happy to respond. Wedgwood Aesthetic 'The Months' series Tile Trivet, 'May', by Helen Miles, 1878
I have for sale a Wedgewood aesthetic movement tile. Entitled'May' from the Old English The Months series designed in 1878 by Helen J.A. Miles. Mounted in the original cast iron trivet frame. This series of 12 transfer printed tiles represented children in various activities illustrating the individual months of the year. In this case two girls are picking posies of apple blossom from the tree. Transfer printed in underglazed blue. With the title'May' printed in the bottom right corner, the tile measures 15.2 cm(6 inches) square. The back carries the impressed marks"Josiah Wedgewood& Sons, Etruria" with the'E' of Etruria reversed, a backstamp exclusively reserved for Wedgewood's tile production. It also shows two small marks in underglazed blue which may be potters' or decorators' marks. These ... morewedgwood art tiles were sold as sets for domestic use or individually. Mounted in a variety of ways, including this original trivet mounting. It is constructed of a border of fine, rope-twist cast iron which is twisted into knots at each corner, forming four feet which prevent heat being transferred through the tile to the surface below. The tile is in very good condition considering its age and function. There is a small hairline extending about 1.5 inches from the right edge. Some very minor fritting to the outer edges and a small amount of crazing, particularly to the back and to the white area of the seated girl's petticoat. This tile has been used as a trivet, therefore there is some expected rubbing to the glaze in the centre. However, there are no major chips or crack, the decoration is crisp and the colours true. The frame is sound and in good order. Unpacked weight is 495 grams. I would be very happy to provide any further information required regarding this piece. I am also happy to combine postage for the purchase of more than one item. All items will be sent by recorded delivery to ensure safe arrival. Items of a value greater than £50 will be sent by sp
