This is a lovely tile in very nice condition. It is eight inches square. The series. Produced by Minton and Hollins in about 1880 is quite rare and this particular tile with the four colours is very striking. Rare PUGIN tile BLOCK PRINT FOR MINTON 1869
Fantastic EARLY BLOCK PRINTED and HAND COLOURED ARTS& CRAFTS/GOTHIC REVIVAL FLORAL 8" tile. DESIGNED by A W N PUGIN and MANUFACTURED and REGISTERED by MINTONS in 1869. The STYLIZED FLOWER STEMS rising and looping are HAND PAINTED in OVERGLAZE. The borders of LITTLE WHITE FLOWERS very typical of PUGIN The reverse is EMBOSSED MINTONS CHINA WORKS and a. DIAMOND REGISTRATION MARK stamped in ink showing date as being 31ST DECEMBER 1869. A.W.N.Pugin was the master of GOTHIC REVIVAL DESIGN. His Block prints designed for Minton are amongst my favorite patterned tiles and should be celebrated in this his BICENTENNIAL YEAR. Condition is wonderful on this hard to find tile. Which is often in bad condition when I have found some in the past, as some of the OVERGLAZE COLOURS in the early days were somewhat unstable. This is often seen with the ... moregreen in particular. In this case however the glaze both over and under are superb! Other than the tinniest nick to bottom RH side there is no wear, cracks or scratches. The very glorious shiney black ground has a few minimal marks but nothing to worry about. Surface glaze wonderfully bright and shiney. Displays beautifully and should not be missed. The horizontal white lines are from the scanner and not on the tiles. Would look wonderful in any collection of tiles especially for collectors of FLORAL BLOCK PRINTED DESIGNS, PUGIN, BRITISH ARTS& CRAFTS MOVEMENT, GOTHIC REVIVAL or simply framed on its own as a DECORATIVE ARTS object. The tile includes"Six Swans" written on the front scene, and has"MS" in the left side of the scene, which is John Moyr Smith who illustrated the Fairy Tale tile series of Minton tiles in the 1880s. This is the SIXTH(although certainly not least albeit damaged) Of SIX from a wonderful, extremely RARE TO FIND, ARTS& CRAFTS BROWN ON WHITE PRINTED 6" PICTORIAL tiles. I will be listing SIX from a SERIES of TWELVE designs AFTER ALBRECHT DURER. This one depicts FOUR SOLDIERS, in very elaborate LATE MEDIEVAL MILITARY COSTUMES holding SWORDS and SHIELDS. Possibly a little overdressed for the occasion but makes it quite amusing! This fabulous set of 12 was MANUFACTURED in 1885 by MINTONS CHINA WORKS, no.1841, in the Minton pattern book. Albrecht Durer(1471-1528) was a German painter and print maker. Who is well known for his detailed engravings. Condition is cracked and glued. The surface glaze is fantastic. Extremely brilliant, very bright and shiney, would still displays quite nicely until another perfect one comes along. One of a set of six butterflies. Early tiles from the 1870s and representing the state of the art in decorated wall tiles. Made at Minton Hollins Patent Tile works but the legend verso omits the Patent Tile Works part so this made soon after the new tileworks was built using biscuit from the old works and the design registered. The design registration probably relates to the border as was common practice. Condition is very good. These tiles tend to suffer wear and flaking to the enamels especially the pink and green but this has perfect colours, the lighter marks on the green are painting flaws. Rare Big Minton Hollins Hand Painted Tile Bird Snake Arts Crafts De Morgan Type

Depicting a bird of prey wrestling with a snake amonst flowers. The outer border has a series of stylised frogs and lily pads that are very charming. Very much in the manner of William De Morgan(Charles& Fred Passenger for example) There are no makers/artists marks that I can see. But it is painted on a Minton Hollins tile. The back has all of the Minton marks scratched out-if you compare the scratched out letters to a Minton Hollins tile marks you will see that they match exactly. Can only imagine that possibly bought ... moreas a blank and then worked on. Or possibly painted by a Minton artist for personal use-ie the blank tile may have been a second. Really well painted and not an amateur piece with very good detail and colouring. Probably made around 1890-1910 approximately. A very rare thing and on a larger 8.75" by 8.75" tile. CONDITION: Good. No cracks or problems. There are two very small nicks to the edge and a small chip on the underside edge that is not visible when looking at the tile. Some dirt here and there on the edges/back. Some scratch marks to the surface-see images. Payment is by Paypal only. NOTE: A lot the items for sale are old or antique and as such have normal signs of wear as would be expected. Items will be very well packed for posting and in a solid box. If the item is over £50GBP in value and sent by Royal Mail/Parcelforce then buyer must ask for extra insurance at cost which can be done by using Special Delivery or increased insurance for international postage. This is a great example of a John Moyr Smith(1839-1912) designed Minton Ceramic Tile from around 1877- it measures 20cm square- it is in great original condition save for some(to be expected) small nibbles around it's extreme edges.
