The scenes on the tiles are of the canal with windmill. Boats and farm or church with small designs in the corners. They are uniquely hand painted in this wonderfully naive style. The condition of all 3 tiles is particularly good for this age. There are a few frits and nibbles to the edge. Some crazing and the tile on the right is slightly brown on the top, this may be the result of old tobacco smoke. Each tile measures 13cm x 13 cm x 7mm(approximately) or 5¼ inches x 5¼ inches. The wooden frame measures just more than 17½ inches x 7½ inches. I have added more pictures to show the condition and thickness of the tiles out of the frame. I'm afraid the colour looks varied as I was having problems with my camera. Manganese is a mineral used since Egyptian times to stain glazes and bodies. The colour varies depending on the glaze. Lead glazes give a purplish brown colour. As with these tiles. Manganese mixed with iron in an alkaline glaze creates a rich black tone. Delftware tiles were very popular. Popular decorative motifs included landscapes and flowers. With smaller designs in each corner. In Britain early delftware copied the Dutch manganese palette. ANTIQUE DELFT CASTLE TILE For sale is one beautiful Dutch Delft tile decorated with a house. Well and ships in the background. The tile is framed with a newer Dutch oak tile frame. As often occurs with these tiles, there are some chips, and dings mostly covered by the frame. Noticeable outside the frame is one chip on the side and a one on the top. There is no maker's mark. The tile measures approximately 5" X 5" and the frame dimensions are 6 1/2" X 6 1/2" I am also selling a similar tile from the same time period under a different listing. Measurements: Tile is approximately 5" X 5" and outer frame dimensions of frame are 6 1/2" X 6 1/2" Age: Based on my research. I believe the tile dates sometime between 1690-1790. Re: Re-Glazing- Perhaps this occurred in some instance with these tiles. I noted a milky glaze drip over a chipped area on one tile. And re-glazing from what I have read, could certainly cause that. Please inspect the high resolution photos of these beautiful tiles carefully prior to placing your bid. Stunning 18th Century Gargoyle Cuenca Spanish Antique tile
Stunning Antique Gargoyle ceramic tile. This is a Spanish Cuenca tile with a very unique design depicting a Gargoyle on top of a flower vase. There are similar tiles made by Ramos Rejano tile company in Seville from the 19/20th Century, this one is older, all hand made and not an industrially produced tile, quite thick and heavy, I believe it is from the late 18th Century, a great piece. Antique 18th century VIANNA DO CASTELLO Portuguese Tile! Marked & Dated, 1794
RARE 18th- early 19th Century Portuguese Vianna Do Castello Azulejo Tile! Makers Mark. Artist Signed, Dated! What a lovely item this is. It is a Portuguese. Handpainted glazed tile featuring the lovely SANTA ANNA Ship from Spain! Her sails are flying high as she gets underway on calm seas. The ship is historically accurate as far as its unique shape, the location of the three mast, sails, shrouds(nets the crew crawls up to tend to sales and flags) and gun ports. The artist even put a Jibboom on the front! The colors are beautiful. These are typical for the late 1700's, earkt 1800's. This FAIENCE tile was made, painted with enamel base paint, glazed, and then fired giving it a clear shiny, very protective sheen. Enamel Faience finish is protecting this antique painting and giving the heavy tile overall durability. There are two chips(not ... moresure if the were made prior to painting or after but they are not noticeable when you look at the tile as a whole) on base of tile(see photos) and there are"pox marks" where bubbles popped on the three thin, blue flags atop the mast, and in two places in the ocean these marks actually look as though they were made on purpose to me. If you take a piece of paper and cover the sides of the tile one at a time, and, then do a rubbing, you can see the marks(maker and I believe artist) as well as the date(which is difficult to make out, but after rubbing again, I believe it says 1794. The manufacturer mark was used from 1774-1812. and some other information I could not translate. There are also marks when you make a rubbing the same way on the back of the tile, as well as marks you can make out if you have great vision. which I do not. Luckily, this tile was never put up for others to enjoy. In Viana Do Castelo, where this was purchased in the 1940's, the local people put up and remove the tiles as they get worn or need to be changed out. Description This antique circa 18th century or earlier English medieval Gothic embossed terracotta pottery tile. Has a central panel of three sunflowers tied with a ribbon and bead ball border and small flower head to each corner. The tile corner sections have alternate sunflower heads and fleur de lis leaf details. The tile has hand trimmed edges and hand scraped back and is unmarked. The wear and hand finish on the back would suggest an early date. CONDITION It is in good condition apart from little chips to the top two corners. ANTIQUE DUTCH DELFT PAINTED POLYCHROME BIRD ON BRANCH TILE 18TH CENTURY RARE
Offered for auction is a good antique Delft Polychrome painted bird tile This is a good antique dutch delft tile. One of several I have listed and I believe it dates to the 18th century or possibly earlier. It measures approx 13 cm x 13 cm. The bird is perched on a branch that is shaded in green, the bird is well painted and is a good scarce, decorative piece. It is in good condition with a few minor nibbles on the bottom edge and a scratch running up the middle of the tile. THIS BEAUTIFUL OLD TILE WAS PART OF A RECENTLY ACQUIRED ENGLISH ESTATE AND WAS SAID TO HAVE BEEN FOUND BY THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE ESTATE UNDER A GROUND COVER OF WET LEAVES WHILE HIKING ALONG THE BANKS OF THE SCHUTTER RIVER IN THE WOODS NEAR A BURNED OUT"JAGDSCHLOSS" NOT FAR FROM BADEN-WURTTEMBERG SOMETIME BEFORE THE EARLY 30'S-THE FELLOW WAS A WEALTHY GERMAN JEW WHO LEFT GERMANY IN 1933 NEVER TO RETURN-THE TILE IS REALLY QUITE LOVELY WITH A TYPICAL MILKY WHITE GLAZED BACKGROUND.
